Starter went bad on my truck... basically went to start it and the starter would make noise but not crank... so i replaced the starter. i fired it up and it sounded like it was grinding on the flywheel as it started. but once it was running it sounded fine. backed it out of my driveway and started off down the street. i didnt get 3 houses away when i could hear noises. so i turn around park it. and get my stethoscope out and put it to the stater i can hear it slightly. then i put it over the flywheel housing and i can really hear it. so i shut the truck off and take off the starter. the teeth on the flywheel are shiny. and i can see little metal shavings around the starter housing. altho the starter looks fine. what could be the problem here? should i add some washers under the starter to pull it back a little?

i found the problem... kragen sold me the wrong starter. it was too short. pretty much screwed up my flywheel.and the nose of the starter is all chewed up from being in contact with the flywheel... now i have to find the starter and the flywheel... looks like its about time for a trip to the junkyard :D on a side note if your gonna work at a parts department it might be best if you know wtf your talking about. dont tell me my truck didnt come 4x4 from the factory... i know dam well it did. idiots.

Personally, I'd make them pay for it. I have had the same problem repeatedly with Autozone and Advanced Auto Parts. Lucky for them I haven't had any flywheel damage yet..
