ok, i have a 92 ranger 2.3l i just replaced the head gasket, i have done the timing like 100 times it seems like, i cant figure this out, i set all the points to where there supposed to be an i stuck my finger in the spark plug hole to see tdc on the compression stroke, i have no more ideas, I NEED HELP:icon_confused: if anyone has any suggestions or has done this before please give me some feed back, if not i can see me blowing this truck up:dunno:

i did my head gasket, upon putting it back together i started doing the timing, it told me to set the points that are on the back cover of the timing and the points on the gears, the key on the crankshaft pulley is at 12:00 and i stuck my finger in the sparg plug hole to see when i was at tdc on the compression stroke, i set all my marks and put it all back together, its starts and runs for a few second then stalls, when it does run it runs like shit,it doesnt seem to want to take fuel, it keeps fartin and poping at me and just runs overall rough

im just all out of ideas and ready to give up, im just getting highly discouraged, i have been working on just the timing for about a week now

I would pop the inspection plugs out of the timing cover and reverify timing. there are 2 different marks on the sync shaft and on the cam sprocket.there is a diamond and a triangle and a matching mark on the rear timing cover. i would set it at tdc on #1 check the crank with the marks on the outside cover.

thats what my hanes manuel tells me an it keeps doing the same thing, im starting to think it could be the cam position sensor

well, the cam sensor does help with fuel, but its more of a "fine tuning" sensor for the injectors. try unpluging it and see if it will run. you can reach it through the drivers side wheel well. if that doesnt do it try starting it on some carb cleaner and see how it reacts.

it doesnt have a problem starting, it just haws a problem staying running aand bogging and poppin while it is running

is it bogging from a lack of fuel? spraying will tell you. if it smooths out its now getting enough fuel.

so should i use carb cleaner or starter fluid? and if it does level out what do you think it could be

carb cleaner. possible clogged filter or a weak pump. if it dosent affect it or makes it worse we just ruled out it being fuel related. then we move on to coil output plugs/wires

you don't have a cam position sensor on a 92. There are marks on the timing cover for timing the crank pulley. don't just guess where 12:00 is. use the marks. also check to ensure the keys are still in the key ways. Definitely sounds like a timing problem. Also you don't need to worry about the oil pump gear. doesn't matter on a 92. just make sure the arrow on the cam gear is lined up with the one on the timing cover and the crank is at TDC.

sorry its not a 92 its a 96 i was thinkin of my 92 mazda i think thats why i wrote 92, i apologize to everyone, its a 96 ranger 2wd 2.3l

in that case you do have a cam sensor. but i think it's mounted on the head and takes it's reading from the oil pump gear itself. So on your motor lining up the oil pump sprocket is crucial. If you could take some pictures, maybe we could see something you're missing.
