I get a Chatering sound while I accelerate from a stop for about thru 2 gears, or if I climb a hill it'll cahtter til the truck is not laboring up the hill.
I was wondering what would cause this, my engine seems to run good, idles OK and it's been going on for awhile now, I have some time so I can look into it. Does anyone know what would be causing it to chatter during acceleration?

Is it pinging? What octane of fuel are you using?

where is the noise coming from?

It's not a ping. It sounds like a chattering, metal rattling against metal.
I am afraid to admit it's the timing chain, it sounds like the front of the engine.
I don't know how long it's been going on, it could be 3 yrs now it's been doing this.
is it gonna break?
How hard is it to change the timing chain?

Its been like that for 3 years and NOW youre worried about it breaking?!!?!?!

I'm guessing it's that clack that most trucks make when it's in the in between point of dying and taking off. Try giving it a lil more throttle when you take off and waiting for a lil longer to get the rpm's higher before you shift to 2nd.

WTF are you talking about? :icon_confused:

The sound a motor makes when you're taking off and it isn't getting enough fuel and is about to stall. Both of my 2.9's would do it especially on a hill if I had the truck loaded down. My old 350 would do it in 3rd gear when I was hauling a load of horses and I didn't get the rpm's high enough before shifting.

Thought about it a second and realized I generalized by saying all motors. What I meant was the sound a motor with a manual trans makes when it's about to stall out. Does that make more sense?

I know the noise youre talking about. That happens when you bog the engine way down. He's said it happens through 2 gears. Do you really think he's been bogging the engine though 1st and 2nd gears for 3 years?

Hes got an '02 4.0l, which means SOHC. They are well known to have timing chain issues. Do you still think he hasnt learned to drive his truck in 3 years, or do you think he has a very common timing chain issue?

I don't know how he drives that's why I suggested something for him to try. The fact that it's been happening for 2-3 years and the motor hasn't quit on him made me think that if it was the timing chain it would have failed by now. Changing his driving habits as a test would be a simple experiment and he wouldn't be out any money unlike tearing the front of the motor off would be. Also I'm assuming he's not a kid and doesn't go slamming gears or hauling butt every where and that's why I suggested what I did.

ladies! that's enough!

i'm with roudy actually, check the shift points first... there's a half decent chance the truck is bogging because maintenance hasn't been done or a problem with the engine, causing a lack of power (fouled plugs, ect)

There is an updated set of timing chain tensionsers. Go to your local Ford dealer and get a set of those, and some new intake gaskets because you have to take the intake off the get at the rear one.

I have seen them shut up a very old, very noisy engine.

I don't think the plugs have been changed, the wires are original, and the gas filter too.
I usually changed them, but been out of work for awhile now.
It sounds more like a chatterinwhen I take off and it disappears when there drag is less on the engine. I know if it was a timing chain, it wouldn't have lasted 3 yrs. it would have let go, and I figure it would have by now, it doesn't do it all the time, the idle is still smooth, it's only when I take off from a stand still then it stops after a couple of gears or if I punch it it will do it then stop again.
I read SOHC are famous for chains breaking?
Or is it lack of matainence?
