Have a question on this Radius Arm Bushing

just do it like the shops do around here..... They take a comealong and attach it to the i beam one one end then the other end to the wall.. or lift post.. and witht he 1 1/8'' nut undone crank on the comealong till she pops out.. :icon_confused:

So what size are the bolts? I would rather make it easier for me in the future. I'll most likely remove the spring and unbolt the front though.

What size should the hole be where the Rad arm goes through? Or in other words, how would one tell it has been ruined? I just like to know these things.

Bolts for the RA brackets?

1/2 - 20 x 1"

As for the hole, you'll know right away if it's ruined or not, the hole will be oblong with the lip for the bushing all shredded up.

It's not real hard to get 'em out that way but, puttin' 'em back in... Whao!!

The hole is actually 12mm. Some times a 1/2" bolt won't go without a little grinding, I use a die grinder. I have used and seen used 7/16" bolts. They fit without grinding. A round file will work but, it is a lot of work.

If the hole in the bracket is damaged from running a bad radius arm bushing, it is quite obvious when you get it apart. You will know. The hole should be round and the new bushing should fit fairly snug. The new bushing may slide in with zero resistance but, shouldn't wobble up and down.

Replacing Radius arm bushings

Hello all,

I have just replaced my radius arm bushings again, I take out the spring and undo both bolts and back off the nut that holds the bushing tight to release the arm, then put graphite urethane back in[/ATTACH]bushings back in.

ask me any questions..

yes I put new shocks while in there.

Radius arm pulling with a come along

This idea is not recommended as it can damage the pivot point bushing. DUH
I can move the arm by hand and have a helper work the arm off the axle.
See my fix above with pictures.:yahoo:

When i did mine, i pulled the whole front end off and did the axle pivots too. at 200 000 they were all about due for a change

Pivot bushings

I just ordered mine from 4 Wheel Parts here in Tucson as well as cab bushings, mine is at 200,000 also.. great running 2.9L never rebuilt yet.

I dont see what the problem is about removing 2 rivets per side. Grab a grinder with a steel disc, and if your scared of sparks, get a face shield and pair of gloves. Its easy, and takes 2-3 minutes a rivet if your handy with a grinder.

Rivets

Why take off fully good parts that are solid, my drivers side is bolted, due to an accident before I got her, I dont mind as I can do the whole thing in 4.5 hours, as well inspect the parts for cracks etc.

not to go off topic, but i just put on some new skyjacker extended radius arms, and the instructions said to also add the old ford OEM plastic spacer, i didnt see a way that this part fit in with the radius arm bushings, so i didnt use it, has anyone else every done this, and if so, will this likely shorten the life of my bushings.

Radius arms nylon bushing

I still have mine in, they are on the back side , they go in first then the new bushing and then the washer and nut.
:D

I pulled my radius arms out after taking the springs and big bolts.

Put new graphite ones back in with a smidge of plumbers grease to keep free.

4.5 hours from start to back on the road.

If the bushings are junk you'll know it. Mine were dry-rotted and cracked. You can get bushings at napa. You'll have to get the rear nut off the end of the RA off to swap the bushing. You may be able to get around pulling the spring. Seems like you could go pull the RA's nut, and the TTB arm pivot, drop the arm down, and pivot the whole thing so that the RA comes out of its bracket. Good luck with all the 1 1/8 bolts, I think every one of mine required PB, heat, and alot of muscle to break loose. Give yourself more time than your plannning on right now.

So...I took a angle grinder, and got the head of the rivets off, but now how do I get the rivet out of the hole?

Use a punch and a hammer and hammer the rest of the rivet out of the hole.
