Here is my e-toughness: Show me a scan or photo of the page of your father-in-laws manual where it says the load rating is 500# and I won't ban you.

My take would be sway bars plus bags or overload springs.

Instead of bags or springs, another possibility are air shocks. I just recently bought a pair for my b-II to help the worn-out springs. They definitely help when carrying loads and can be returned to normal as needed. As easy to install as shocks The pair cost me ~ C$140.00.

To be honest I haven't had good luck with airshocks.. I've ran them on my 72 v8 Pinto and had to replace them every couple of years, them my 1960 Falcon wagon had saggy springs too they made the arse too hard and bent the sheet metal (I never had a chance to tow with them like I planned) but thats my experiance.
my truck rides nice and the springs have not flatten or reverse arched yet, they just seem a little light while loaded/overloaded... after pulling the intake and the AC off the motor in the bed the truck didnt roll so bad. so thats about 100lds off the highest point of the load!
Just a thought but what about towing with a rear that has a center link to keep the rear end centered while underload reducing side loads while loaded.

A Watt's link? I don't see the necessity if your bushings are good and shackles the stock length, probably overkill IMO. The trailer won't put more than 500lbs on the hitch if designed properly and side loads are minimal if you stay within the speed limit. A load equalizing hitch is also a good investment, it transfers some of the load weight to the front of the truck, helps with steering. I've also used bags under my 1/2 ton and had good experience with that set up, and I don't think there was a rear roll bar. I separated the air line so I could air up one side more according to load placement. Next time I will have a valve between the two sides to equalize pressure.

I like the idea of a nice ride while unloaded and the option to air up when loaded. The helper/overload springs would be as good if the spring rates work with your loads. A little experimentation with springs, if you have the extra and if you're so inclined, would be the cheaper route, again IMO.

I put airbags on my B2 because they are notorious for ass end sag. They work great. Can go from squatty stock to about 4" of rear lift with a air compressor and 30 seconds.

$300, and they go from the axle to the frame, no changing leaves, no broken shock mounts (air shocks are hard on those)

I had air shocks on my truck for 11 years, never hurt anything. They were rusty when I got the truck so they had been on a long time before I got it. I hauled all sorts of stuff, towed a manure spreader that put it on the bumpstops... never had a problem.

I changed the springs because the originals were shot. 26 years is enough.

I have used air shocks but that was back when I was trying to fit fat tires on a '64 Ford. For load carrying, I don't think it's good because of the shock mounts. Air bags are fine.

Adding springs (air or otherwise) is fine if you have the axle to support the load.

Well I took measurements on the truck after pulling the last engine and trans out of the bed... the old springs popped right back up (very resilient) but with the load they were flat. About 800 LBS.
SOOOOO.. I'm going to try the Explorer spring swap and the Coil Spring overloads with new bushings and so forth. which in theory is not unlike the reversed leaf spring stacks.

Do to my past experience I will not do air shocks on any of my vehicles, I've just had the worst luck with them...

You could just toss a simple AAL in the pack and call it good. They are all of $35 from procomp and would probably accomplish all you need. All this talk of fabbing shit is rediculous.
