ive been doing research and everything and i think im going to go get a akita puppy today.. anyone ever own one that can give some tips or advice of what to expect ?

They are big lovable dogs… a bit on the dumb side tho:icon_twisted:

I had two. Advice? Handle them firmly. If you don't have experience training dogs tehn use classes in your area. Akita have very strong instincts, more so than any other dog I have seen. If you don't keep control of that dog it will take over on you. One of mine got put down after my father babied it upon my leaving. The dog got more and more bold until it started attacking people that exerted control.

ive got alot of experience handling pitbulls and boxers ... i went got a female 5month old akita today ill post pics later

Sweet. Akitas will destroy and overpower the breeds you mentioned so be careful with other dogs and kids. These things hunted bear in Japan. Seriously powerful dogs. IMHO they make all other breeds look girlie.

they are really smart ive already gotten her to sit and come .. in a couple weeks im enrolling her into training classes .. she gets along with out kids really well and loves playing with our 2lb chihuahua ..

My neighbor has one. He's getting old, but I've known him for 5 years now. He's a great dog to have around even though they sort of neglect him. He's free range so he comes over all the time to say "roooo roooo rooooooo." I have kids and he seems to be more interested in protecting them than hurting them. He gets along well with my 130lb lab. However, all dogs can switch in an instant as he did last week when he tried to carry one of my roosters away. Soon as he heard me holler he dropped it. The chicken was fine and that was the end of it. I don't think any different of him for it. Now that he's been scolded I don't think I'm going to have to worry about him anymore. Seems he's very intelligent like that. Good luck with your dog.

Never had an Akita, but I had a Samoyad once. We have a Cocker Spaniel now. Any dog can be a good companion, they do require a lot of attention and training though.

Never had one either but that's a really good site to check out the different breeds. Attention and training like Bill said is the key. Some dogs, just like people are going to give you trouble no matter. I do Basenji rescue work, had one that had been somehow mistreated. Took a while before it learned my trust but well worth it.
Bill -- Going over to Iola? Mustang club from Point is supposed to be there on Sunday.

We had one. They are friendly most of the time, but it didn't like our neighbor and it got into fights with our lab. It died of cancer before it hit 3, though. Our neighbor also has one and it's not too friendly, but it's been neglected.

My neighbors have one, I think around 4 1/2 months old (just a bit older than my Lab). Really nice looking dog, I had no idea they were used for hunting. Always looked like a big fluff ball that would make a good footrest to me :D

Ive got an akita that was born around new years 2009. She is a great dog..but she is stubborn. We have to keep her on a leash or she will run up to greet people...she is about 45lbs right now...So people dont take to kindly of a large strange dog running up to them. She has to eat Blue Buffalo brand fish and sweet potato food because she is allergic to wheat, soy and poultry...I hear its common for them to be allergic to wheat and soy. Cant bathe them as often as other dogs because their skin is super sensitive. They tend to lick themselves like a cat too...

It is also a good idea that if you get one, you have no other dogs of the same sex. They are loners unlike most dogs...they dont run in packs and they usually bond with only one or two people on a deep level. My female just started being aggressive towards small dogs...mostly small female dogs...So we have to be careful when taking her to the dog park...if there are little dogs in the big dog area, we just walk her around the lake. They are best suited as inside dogs. I dont know if I posted any pics of mine.

Here is my akita, her name is Akira...I wanted to name her kuma...but since my gf drove to Texas and bought her for me, I figured she could name her.

Nah, I can't go over to Iola this weekend. We spent last weekend camping at the Manawa Rodeo, and I have stuff to do around home. Sure wish I could though. The Iola car show rocks!
