Has anyone ever heard of a C4 in a Ranger?

I'm looking at a 86 2wd for a v8 swap. I haven't physically seen the truck yet, but I've been in contact with the current owner, and the owner previous to current about it. The previous owner says the truck has a C4 in it. He had it rebuilt while he drove it. I have never heard of a Ranger having a factory C4, so I'm guessing its a C3.

So I'm wondering what are the chances this is actually a C4?? I think pretty slim, as I didn't know Rangers came with C4s. And if he replaced the tranny, could he get a C4 to bolt up to the 4 banger??

it is likely a c4.....

well...a c5...c4:D

So, after doing some reading in the tech library, I gather a C5 is a newer version of a C4?? Are bell housings interchangeable? (I presume the 4 cyl won't bolt up to a 302)

Yes, from memory it's a C4 with a lockup torque converter. You can switch the bellhousing over to a V8 bellhousing from a C4 if you wanted to use it against a V8. I didn't realize the C5 was paired with the 4 cylinder Rangers, but it may have been. It was definitely an option from 83-84 behind the 2.8 V6's.

I dont know about depth, but the 302 and 2.3L share bellhousing patterns. So technically that tranny as is will bolt to the 302, the only issue will be the torque converter. I dont know if you need a larger one for the 302, and if you do then I dont know if a larger one would fit in the bellhousing for the 4 banger.

I've never heard that before. Are you sure?:icon_confused:

I didn't notice any thing similar between the Windsor and 2.3L OHC bellhousing patterns in any list. After a quick search, I found this:

http://www.ndperformance.com/how_to/2300_t56/base.html

They are using an adapter plate to mate the 2.3L OHC engine to a Windsor bellhousing. Everything else between the engine and trans in the bell appears to be custom made.

or you can find a cougar/ tbird that has a c5 with a 3.8 and you are set. the 3.8 and 302 have the same pattern

3.8 and 302 are the same pattern prob is hes trying to go to a 2.3, and i dont think it will work w/o modification. unless your running a 2.3t at 500 hp i dont see using that much tranny an m50d is more than plenty.

Bellhousing for the 302 is deeper than the 4 cyl and 6 cyl bells.

According to my handy dandy transmission parts book 1985 rangers and up to 94 have the A4LD ...1983- 1984 had either the C3 or C4 but that dont mean my handy dandy tranny parts book is right either..

i have owned an 83 with a 2.3 c5 and an 84 with a 2.8 and a c5

I thought they would have had OD by 86as well. Oh well, I have an AOD that was mated to a 302 somewhere. Roads were closed today, and likely will be tomorrow as well (rain, in Manitoba, in February WTF!?!:icon_confused:) so I haven't seen the truck yet.

could you clarify that?

cause as is the 2.3 bell wont bolt to a 302....and a 302 stacked c4 is different then a 2.3 stack as well.

well I gotta say, cause many moon ago when I was dropping a 5.0L in my 4 banger mustang, many people said the bell would work with the 5.0L and Ive heard that a few times since then. I ended up getting a new bell because the 5.0Ls was deeper. So for the last 8 years Ive been a believer that the 2.3L bell pattern was the same, which I find now it isnt. This disturbs my whole world now, my bad fellas but heres all the bellhousing groups for later reference.
