2.3L ('83-'97) Harmonic Balancer Removal


Weld it to the crank!!!
 
That little bit of broke off key won't hurt anything. Toss it. Clean it up with a file, steel wool, scotch brite or a wire brush.
Unless the key is sheared or partially sheared the cam sprocket will be fine. Then again, it's on a German designed v6 that started out a arocker arm engine with solid lifters and finally morphed into an OHC design with hydraulic followers with many steps in between. I think those tiny lifters in the 2.9 and the bleed of lube to feed them sort of condemn the cam bearings to a short life. I think.
Do you have access to a 'pneumatic chisel' and compressor? If you do, creating a dull chisel or pokey, stuffing it into the pneumo, and applying it to the center bolt while at the same time applying pry pressure to the rear surface seems to be a good combination. Air chisels used as dildoes for auto parts seems to make them become more cooperative. More or less.

You think that's bad, have you ever done head gaskets on a 6.0 Powersmoke?

If a crank pulley doesn't come off, heat and a bigger hammer. I've had a few stuck bad enough that they break, and I just re-position the puller and blast the center of the pulley with the blue wrench for a little while. Then if the impact gun doesn't rattle it off, the Dewalt grinder gets called to action.
