my 1989 2.9 turns over a lot more than it should when its cold, also smell gas, it runs rough until i rev it 1 time .when i have been driving it ,it cranks right up an runs smooth....any 1 know what this problem could be?, new tps, idol solinoid, fuel pump, gas filter.......thanx for any info

Did you clean/check the MAF sensor and run a vacuum guage and did you reset the computer by disconnecting the battery for 30 minutes you need to do that any time you clean or change a sensor so it is not running on old values.

nope, didn't do any of tha, i'll try.......thanx

cool disconnect the battery and clean the sensor and see how it runs sometimes it take s a bit to set new values so drive it around at medium speeds through all the gears and see if it still does it. The vacuum guage will tell you the overal health of the motor and kinna point you in the right direction alng with running the codes take it up to the part store and have them scan it for codes if you dont have a reader.

I thought the 2.9s were a map system?? If not that is a good way to fix crap

^MAFs came into account after 89. 86-88 had MAPs.

How about cleaning the Idle Air Control Valve? If they dont open at start up, it'll do kind of the same. At least my truck did.

He put in a new IAC I believe but didn`t reset the computer with the TPS

MAS was in Califonia Emission Rangers only.. Any others used MAP sensor hooked to vacuum.

Check and make sure the fuel pressure regulator is not leaking fuel into the engine thru the vacuum line, and also might be worth while to check the ECT sensor. See this site for tons of info on testing some of these sensors:

Fuel pressure test would also verify fuel system is operating as it should..
