This has me baffled. How do you go about diagnosing something like this? The truck is a 93 4.0 5spd 2wd. Has a lot of original parts. Could it be like the ignition coil or something? Spark plugs and wires have been replaced as well as fuel filter. Could also using the wrong/low quality fuel cause this issue too? Because this summer I ran 91 octane ethanol free gas and still have some in the tank. I was going to run the current tank down and put regular 87 octane in it to see what happens. Ideas, comments? All would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

Edit: I just realized that I described it wrong. Its more of a extended crank than hard starting.

Try priming the fuel rail before cranking.

Key to Run, wait/listen for 2 sec, key to OFF. Repeat 2x,then crank the starter.

I haven't really tried anything like that. I'll do it today when I go to school in a little bit here.

+1 check the fuel pressure and after the engine is off watch and see if it drops quick. Leaking injector/s, fuel pump check valve, pressure regulator could be culprit. Sniff the dipstick if you smell fuel it is a leaking injector change the oil.

I was thinking I should do something like that. But here's the weird part, I did a fuel injection system test on my truck for a grade at school but everything tested out fine. I guess something might be ready to let go now..........

Well, I tried the priming thing and it seems to start sooner. So, I guess tomorrow morning I will be checking the oil just to see if it smells like gas just like kimcrwbr1 mentioned. I am also going to be checking the fuel pressure at school tomorrow too.

pull the vacuum line off the fuel pressure regulator and make sure there is no gas in it......... change the fuel filter.....if there is still an issue check fuel pressure..

I've replaced the fuel filter before. I guess if it stops raining, I will check the pressure regulator tomorrow.
