97 Ranger Hard shifting

Hey there...this is probably a pretty simple question for some of the folks on here but, here it goes.

I have a 97 4.0 4x4 ranger manual tranny. Sometimes when I go to put the truck in 1st it won't let me. I have to take it back out and on the second try it goes right in. Same thing goes for when I am trying to shift into second and third, though not as frequently. Is this a clutch adjustment issue?

Thanks in advance.

i've seen a few of these problems; try pumping the clutch pedal before your first try into first gear, if you have a hydraulic clutch, pumping the air out(much like brake lines with air in them) the shifter should engage easier. hope this works. if it does, the master needs to be bled or possibly replaced. good luck!!!

FYI, the truck does have a hydraulic clutch and it is non adjustable.

but i agree, it sounds like a failing master (or slave) cylinder.

Remove tranny

Do I have to remove the transmission to replace the slave cylinder?

Yes, sorry man

But you may be able to get away with just unbolting it and sliding it back then taking out the slave, depending on how long and skinny your arms are:icon_thumby:

The slave will probably cost you around 92$ also

But you want to make sure that the slave is the probelm first, get a flashlight, get under there, have a buddy push in the clutch (Ebrake on of course!) and look for any fluid coming out anywhere.

im having the same issue in a 96 4.0 4x4. so youre not alone. im working on tracking it down, though it sounds like you guys have thinks figured out. if i do crack the tranny open i will be replacing the clutch while im in there.

ill try the pump the clutch thing and see if it helps.
