I have a 96 4.0L 4x4 5spd that I has been shifting hard at times. It will not go into gear with out a good deal of force and will not come out of gear with out force. It seems to start to happen after driving around town in stop and go traffic, lots of use of the clutch. Its not a gradual thing ether, it will go from shifting fine one moment and then not. I can be sitting at a stop sign everything is fine and then suddenly I can feel the clutch partially engage almost as if I had let out on the pedal about half way suddenly and the truck will start to creep forward, and I have the pedal all the way to the floorboard.

Its like the clutch is not fully disengaging, Iam guessing that heat may be a factor as I can let the truck sit for several hours and the problem goes away.

We have bled the clutch twice now which only seems to slightly lessen the problem for awhile. The clutch is also relatively new with less that 10,000 miles on it.

Thanks for your help

Did you ever resolve your problem?
Just curious because I am having same type of problem.
I just replaced all the components and dont know if my tranny is dying, or the new slave is shot.
Thanks.

i have the same problem with my 94 3.0 5spd.
wish i new what the cause was

I am assuming that when you replaced the clutch you also replaced the slave cylinder, right?

well i just bought my truck 2 months ago it has 125,000 on it guy i bought it from said the clutch was new.
what happens to me is if i let the truck sit and idle in nuetral for an extended period of time i have to use a lot of force in order to get it into gear. (any gear)
also happens after about 30 mins or so of around town stop and go traffic.
funny thing is yesterday i drove it 75 miles on the expressway @ 75mph and whne i got off the freeway it was shifting just fine.
it kind of puzzles me.
any body got any suggestions
