Hey everyone. I have just aquired a 1988 ranger 2.3 auto. I have replaced all brake components incuding some lines and I plan on focusing on steering and suspension. Since I started driving the truck however I found the tranny shifts very hard from first to second and revs fairly high before shifting. I try to time out the shift and get out of the throttle before it shifts but it still shifts hard. This only happens between 1st and 2nd. I'd like to figure this out before sinking money into the suspension.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Jay

Look at the vacuum line to the modulator on the tranny. Look for cracks in the vacuum line or if it is even connected it should be on the passenger side of the tranny mine was hard to get at from the cat in the way. If that is the problem it will fix a vacuum leak also but if not put a new modulator in there.

Thanks. I'll take a look after work tomorrow. I hope its as simple as that.

+1 on that. My truck had a problem with the vac line running off of the T where the FPR is that goes back to the trans. Once fixed, it shifted nice and mushy, like an auto!
