I have a 2002 Ranger, 4.0 SOHC and it is a 4x4. When I take off from a stop the first two shifts are hard. Other shifts are smooth.

First, what could be causing it? I have had the pan off and the fluid looks/smells ok. No metal shavings I can see.

2nd what transmission do I have? 5r55e? or what?

does your tranny have a shift modulator it would be above the cat on the pass side with a vacuum line going to it make sure it is plugged in and pulling a vac if it is connected then it is bad . Kinna a biotch to get to but that would be the first thing to check

I just checked autozone yours has a control solenoid clean the connectors and see if that helps not sure where it is on the tranny but it looks similar the the modulator except it has a two wire connector

Or maybe it is for the OD lockout do you notice a difference when you shift into OD if you have it maybe it is stuck on other than that I should have stuck with I dont know. does it say what tranny you have on the door panel

If TR is for "transmission" the letter under that is "D"

That would be the place to start it is just a solenoid so check for continuity. You should feel a difference when you shift into and out of od at high speed does it jerk when you shift from forward to reverse but ye when you get under there check the connectors and clean them with electrical cleaner and give them a shot of dielelectric grease when you put them together especially if you go mudding.

Oh I thought you meant if it shifted better with OD off. With the OD off the first two shifts are still hard.

To answer your question, yes I do feel a difference when turning OD on and off at high speed.

No it does not jerk when shifting between forward and reverse.

On earlier trannies there is a vacuum modulator that makes for hard shifts if it not working correct something to do with fluid pressures but someone here should chime in that knows or I always get a manual for vehicles I own as I have always done my own work except tires and alignments. You can somtimes get a cheap manual at the bone yard they usually have a ton of them GL

your going to feel a diff at high speeds because at about 45 the auto trannys shift into O/D. so turning it off makes it go into a lower gear.
