Hard drive?

I would find a low level format tool if you want to wipe the drive. you can google low level format cd bootable image, and you can download the .img file then use burning software to burn a bootable cd. Insert that into your cd rom and you will boot into the utility. The utility will write either all 0's to the drive or 1 then 0 to the drive.

if you do this, it will be very difficult to recover any data from the drive, unlike a format.

For wiping a hard drive:

Step 1: Find "Darik's Boot and Nuke" online and download it.

Step 2: Burn to a disk

Step 3: Remove all things you DONT want to wipe or unplug them.

Step 4: Insert and boot from the disk, choose short wipe or Department of defense grade wiping..

Step 5: When done, reinstall and lock disk in a safe!

Most dangerous thing I have in my computer toolbox// :icon_thumby:

Don't wipe a Solid state harddrive like this, it wastes read/write cycles..

thanks everyone This problem is solved

Good to hear you fixed it...usually is simple enough...:icon_thumby:

You've gotten pretty good at fixing your Ranger...from what I've read of your upgrades and posts...if you think of computers as being similar to vehicles you'll be working with a turbo charged lifted 4x4 desktop in no time...

probably would be better to start your own thread for this, but we need to know what isn't working on the computer. is it dead as in does not do anything when you press the power button? or does it come on and beep and nothing else? do you get a "no boot device" error?

if any version of the first two problems the easiest rout to take is to remove the hard drive and buy a usb case for it. (they are usually 30 bucks or so) put the harddrive in the usb case and plug it into another computer and go to your documents folder or wherever your files are and transfer them all off. As an added bonus, you now have an extra external harddrive.

What Observer said, DBAN is the best live disk to erase a hard drive to make the data insanely hard to recover. We use it at work for financial data and other records.

Another nice tool for windows is eraser. Does the same think but just at a file level. So you can just scrub your drive from financial files or whatever you want to not be recoverable.
