My 1996 4.0 auto supercab has started to downshift really hard. i mean i notice it sometimes more than others. i know the tranny has probly never had service. i have checked the fluid all looks good to me. i wouold like to change the filter and fluid because id say the guy i got it from maybe just would top it off or whatever. hes a if it isnt broke dont touch it kinda guy. i have heard if the filter has never been changed dont do it because you might cause more problems.

anyone ever hear of this?? any thoughts on my hard downshift??

letme know what you ranger guru's think.

thanks.

Change the fluid and filter!!! It may not solve your problem, but if you want that transmission to last at all, you need to service it regularly.

Hows the upshifts?? is the OD light flashing??Could possibly be a code in transmissions computer and not turn OD light on, could be EPC sticking at times holding line pressure higher than normal.

Does it down shift hard in ALL gears??

Ok so lets say its possibly a 2-1 downshift(second gear to first gear)so if it is a 2-1 downshift could possibly be the low roller sprag slipping and then grabbing. It could also be if it is a 2-1 downshift MLPS (neutral safety switch as some call it)..or it could be in valve body(valve sticking and what not).

what could i do to fix those problems??? im not really trannny savy.

Take it to a tranny shop and get there opinion.... have them put a scanner on it to see that all the electrical inputs are good(like MLPS reading correct gear selected and that the voltages match, TPS and so on, speed sensor). Not to be a smart ass here but, its hard to tell you whats is actually wrong (or pin point)your problem over the internet alls we can do is direct you to a possible problem.

oh yeah i realize that. but thank you for your input. like i said im really dont know much about elec. trannys and/or trans. case for that matter.
