Hackers worked on my truck

I have an 87 4 x 4 ranger I bought for 300 dollars. I figured I would have have to do some work on it. I pulled the interior out to fix rotted out holes in the floor. The shifter had a shitload of slop and the transfer case lever is sloppy and the 4 x 4 light stays on. The neutral switch is new but was not hooked up. I found the wire with the old switch broke of in the connector. I removed the bolt that holds the transfer shifter to the linkage. I can't get it out. It looks like I have to remove the slotted piece that the shifter is in but I have not crawled under the truck to find out how. While I am in this area I hope I will find the 4 x 4 switch. I am looking for advise from some of you guys that have worked on this before.
