My 2004 extended cab is a gutless wonder. Sometimes I cant believe how little power it has. Does anyone notice the same? I dont jump on the rpm's much though, seems like the fuel consumption increases as I rev her up. Kinda defeats the purpose of a 4 banger vs. a 6, mileage isnt that great. I'll tell you what though, I've owned Rangers since 1989 and I cant imagine ever driving anything but.

You know, I thought that keeping the revs low on my '06 would help it get better mileage, but I've actually found the opposite to be true. Before, I would always shift below 3,000 rpms and would get around 20 mpgs. That got old real fast, so I started revving it up a bit, driving more spirited and winding it up to 4-5k's on a regular basis. I've actually noticed my mileage increase by about 2-3 mpg's, probably due to the motor being more in it's power band, rather than being lugged down all the time.

i shift just around 3,000 rpm's in my '01 and i get 28 mpg.

I have a few small hills around here, so, I don't even bother using 5th gear any more(overdrive on the manual tranny). At 55 mph I'm running around 2700-2800 RPM. Feels a lot peppier. Still am getting about 21 mpg.

I have a manual tranny, It would have been nice if Ford put a tach in my truck! Why on earth would you not want a tach with a manual transmition?

Oops, I was thinking of my wifes vehicle!!! It's a 2.5L 2000 model year!!!!!

lol yea i was gonna say man... the duratec is ballsy. 3.0's better watch out no joke

:icon_rofl: Same here. This engine is better than the older Ranger sixes. It actually has more Horsepower I believe.

2.3

i just got my 2002 shortbed xlt a few months ago and love this engine! even with the auto it runs and performs great!
