grinding

when i lock the hub in and put it in 4x4 high or low i hear a grinding noise the 4x4 works fine but the noise. this is my first 4x4 so just ask me question not sure what info you might need to know.

its a 96 ranger auto tranny 3.0
 
Well first off this should be in the 4wd systems section of the forum not the 4x4 suspension.

Second, Which part of the truck is the grinding coming from? T-case? wheel area? front diff? Does the grinding sound change with RPMs? Is it constant or does it just happen say every revolution in one certain spot?

Need more info to pinpoint what to check.

Not a problem, when a MOD sees it they will move it so if you can't find it here at least you know why.

I would start with u-joints (both axleshaft and driveshaft) then wheel bearings. Still need more info to really help tho. High pitch or low pitch grinding? Sitting still or moving? Going forward and reverse, turning?

Not trying to be an ass but the more you can tell us the better we can help you.
 
its griding only when its going.

the noise is pretty loud.

makes noise turning and forward and backwards
 
You said when you lock the hubs in so im assuming you have manual hubs?
 
ok well that eliminates the junk auto hubs. Being that you said the noise is loud, My next guess would be u-joints. Check to see if you have any play in the front joints/shafts.
 
you're not trying to drive on pavement in 4wd are you?

try to drive with the hubs LOCKED and the transfer case in 2WD and see what happens
 
there is a lil play in the front axles and front drive shaft


the noise is still there when the hubs are locked and its in 2wd but the noise isnt as bad
 
I would have the front wheels up off ground. leave the truck in 2wd but also make sure the hubs are locked.

And hand spin wheels and listen and try to narrow down where you are hearing the noise.

without narrowing it down some it could be U joints or problems in the differential.

I am betting on U joints though since there are 5 of them and they are a wear item and they sound horrible when they are dead.
