Hello all!
This is my first post here, so be nice to the newb! I stumbled on this site today while looking for help with my current problem. Hopefully, you guys can offer some sage advice.
As the title says, I've got a 2003 Ranger 4.0L 4x4 with about 70K on the odometer. A few days ago, it started making some intermittent noises at medium speeds (30mph-ish) that sounded like grinding, or a metal pipe scraping against concrete. At first, it thought it might just be the wear indicators on the brakes, but it has become obvious that isnt the case. Now I can plainly hear it start to make the noise any time I drive with the wheels turned more than about 15 degrees in either direction. Sometimes it barely does it, other times it is quite loud.
It seems to me that one of the front hubs is failing. (It sounds like the driver's side, but it's difficult to tell.) I'm an experienced mechanic, but I'm new to 4x4 Rangers. From what I understand, the 2003 model has hub units that are always engaged, are integral with the ABS sensor, and must be changed as a complete unit. Correct? Is there a way to verify the problem?
I just want to be sure I'm not pulling them apart for no good reason.
Anything else I should look for?
It's due for a brake change anyways, so I plan on doing it all at once. Thanks for the help!
