As described in the tech section article, the lock bolt holding the pinion shaft in place is broken 80% of the time. I discovered mind was broken when I tried to pull the rear axles to change the oil seals. I found and ordered this great tool from the internet that removes the remaining part of the lock bolt in 5 minutes. I was totally amazed that it worked so well. It's essentially an extra long drill bit with drill guides that are screwed into the hole. The bit is long and flexible enough to snake around the bearing cap that's in the way.

I just joined this forum to search for this problem. I have a broken differential pinion shaft lock bolt that I've beat the heck out of. Today I was going to start grinding as other site have said to do, but I think I'll get this kit and give it a try. I don't want to replace the whole carrier. Been there done that!

Thanks for the info and links,
Dan

These links should go in the tech!

That tool rules

I used that exact tool a couple weeks ago. Worked like a proverbial charm
Watch the prices though, I found it for 20bucks or so on eBay & with shipping it was about 26-27 dollars alltogehter.

Only thing I'm confused about is how do you get a drill to fit inside the diff to drill it out :icon_confused:

drill in bolt

there are 2 allen bolts with the same thread as the pinion bolt depending on your situation. Each allen bolt has a guide hole drilled through the center, which is where the drill goes.

Differential Pinion Shaft Lock Bolt Extractor

"This kit comes with a 12" drill bit and guide bolts so you're working on the outside of differential housing, not inside. Matco's been selling these forever for this PITA problem. Hey if the kit doesn't work, you can still grind, hammer, or cut."

I'm quoting this from another forum.

I had no problem with the kit. Worked great!

But how do you get the carrier out if you can't remove the cross-pin?

Kit comes with two extractors (easy-outs)

After you drilling, you use one the extractors to remove the broken portion of the cross pin.

Go to www.fabbriassociates.com/kitinfo.html and you can see the kit's parts.

I'm sure someone else can explain it better than I can. (Wouldn't be the first time).

Of the many rears I've taken out, I've never had a broken bolt, guess I'm damn lucky!

Maybe i'll buy a kit tho, just in case....Looks very useful....

drill

Like stated above, the drill is 12 inches long. Your drill is a foot away from the differential. Its about a 3/16" drill bit.
you rotoate the carrier so the pinion bolt is outside the plane of the face of the housing.

Maybe I'm not following your question.
