Hi All,
This may sound a bit strange but I have to ask as this issue is makin me looney !!! I have a 93 Ranger 4.0 4X4. I have done a lot of mods to it as everything from the front grill to the back axle is either new or been rebuilt and modified. My axles have lockers in them with 4.56 gears now and I am running 33x12.50x15 tires. She runs great in all gears and I can rev the new 4.2 motor up into the 4500 rpm range in all gears except 5th. When on the highway and pushing it it hits about 35 or 3600 rpm and it will feel like it wants to shut off on me. This only happens in 5th gear all the others will rev 4500 and hold it with no problems. So my curiosity has me wondering as with all the work I have done the one thing I did not do was recalibrate the speedometer. Its funny to watch as it is one of those 85 mph speedos and the needle goes all the way down until it can go not further. I really don't know how fast I am really going but I am keeping up with traffic most of the times. The question is does anyone know if there is a governor of some sorts on the truck ?? I am thinking if there is it may be incorporated within the speedometer cable as there is a small box and electrical connector on the cable right where the cable goes into the transmission. Anyone have any thoughts or ideas on this issue I would really appreciate a reply. It is drivin me nuts !!!

Thanks

You need to change the speedo gear to read properly. I dont know of a limiter on a 93, but theres been rumors of limiters on older ones.

I dunno if a 93 has an actual cable or a sensor for the speedo but couldn't you just try disconnecting it and seeing what it does? :dunno:

Rangers do have speed limiters but I don't know how far back that goes.

Yep it does have one !! Just found it !! It is a small connector on the speedo cable right where you insert the cable into the trans housing !! I always wondered what that connection was !! ;)

my 93 had a cable, the 94 2wd does as well. on the 93 I had the limiter kicked in just above 90 mph. I had stock tires and gearing on it. was very squirrelly at 90+ anyhow. the 94 will only do 80 before it hits the limiter but its had a major gear change and tire size change, never have gotten the right speedometer gear. If im on a trip I use the gps to know how fast im really going. @ 55 im off by 7 mph with 225/70/15 tires. With the stock 14’s and 4.10’s the speedometer would read 70 when doing 55. Right now im running 235/75/15 and its off 5 mph @55.
Really wish it had a tach, I tried 2 aftermarket tachs and neither one would work right.

The 98 I had was governed to 110 if you bounce off the limiter a couple times while driving it will stop working. Forever
