I bought some deep creep to clean out my throttle body...Well I cleaned it out purty good..I took out all 4 screws but left it hanging by the throttle cable, I didnt wanna take it off for fear of not getting it back on right..Cleaned out the plate and scrubbed everything w/a toothbrush, then i cleaned the EGR man it was dirty....Well Ive also ran some seafoam through my vacuum line a few weeka ago,,, IM really itchin to clean some other engine stuff,,

ANY suggestions???

Seriously, throw away your Hot Rod magazines. And if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

The TB can be MASSIVELY dirty before it starts causing problems. The EGR less so, but you'll get EGR "insufficient flow" codes first.

Well you see i dont read hot rod mags for fags...Second i have a mild case of OCD, and i like things neat and clean, so therefore everyweekend i clean my engine and truck....Thanks for your input though about the EGR and TB.

I've had the EGR insufficient flow code for about 7 years now. I call the check engine light my nightlight - it keeps me company on long trips.

But now that I'm out of the Marine Corps and I actually have to register my vehicle here in Virginia where I settled down at, I'm going to have to fix that before it will pass inspection.

I didn't know the EGR valve could be cleaned - I thought it just had to be replaced. How do you clean it - just take it off and rinse some solvent through it to free the valve up?

Sorry for the hijack...

Yeah just take it off...I sprayed some deep creep in it, let it set for a while and then i took some Q-TIPS to it like my M-16 in Basic..DEVIL!! And cleaned it thoroughly then just dumped out the access juice..Then took some more q-tips and dried it out a little more...Same way with the TB too.

OH yeah is that MILD post a joke, maybe i have a little worse OCD, but its better to have a clean truck than a dirty one. I beleive your engine will perform and last longer if you clean it good.

Cool - thanks.

I'm pretty sure I even have a few bags of those long wooded q-tips stashed away somewhere that I... acquired, from the armory.

If the EGR really is plugged, a little brake cleaner and Q-tips isn't going to do jack.

Remove it and figure out where the plug is. It might be in the valve, but it is OFTEN in the intake manifold. Sometimes both. You have to chip it out. Lacquer thinner can help soften it. I've had to take a drill bit to the intake manifold passage before.

But also note that insufficient flow doesn't have to mean it's plugged. It can also be an electrical problem. The PCM can't distinguish bad readings from a bad sensor or bad sensor circuit except for the case of out of range readings.

Driving with the CEL lit is a nice way to make a small problem into a big one. Seven years with a plugged EGR? That will make it detonate under load (which can break expensive things, especially pistons, all by itself), and more importantly, you can have another problem show up without even realizing it. Some of these can ruin the engine. Like pig-rich mixtures. That washes cylinder walls, easily scoring them, and can quite easily dilute the crankcase oil. Gasoline makes a piss-poor lubricant.

Oh..man thats a lot of crap it can mess up..Thanks for your comment MAKG..Well you see my moms Accord had a bad one, so she bought one from advance i think...and i put it on for her..It was really dirty..

The mechanic told her ow to put it on b/c she knows nothing of cars...He told her to clean out the manifold where it screws it and then crank the car to blow out the access carbon buildup...

When she cranked it up man it sounded like my 1st TOYOTA 4 banger with a glasspack and no cat..IT was rattingling and popping.....ANYWAYS i thought, well my cars is kinda old and I bet no one has cleaned it out .. SO thats why i cleaned myn...

MAKG knows what he's talking about, take it to heart.

dmanmccann....you need a girlfriend.
A clean engine doesn't fix mechanical issues, it just looks pretty. The more you pull and clean parts that are designed to work in a non-pristine environment the more likely it is to damage said part and hasten it's need for replacement. As stated previously, if it not broken, don't fix it.

It's not going to hurt if he cleans the throttle body...

And if he wants to clean something let him be. If he screws something up, its a lesson learned.

Thanks - I didn't realize that.

Throttle Bodies have special coatings on them to provide the proper airflow to the intake manifold. When you put a solvent on a throttle body it strips it of that coating. Dont mess with the throttle body unless something is wrong with it.

Was it a joke . . .

Well it wasn't intended to hurt your feelings . . . but my friend "I'm really itching to clean . . . stuff" - you are a little past mild. But that's not to say it's a bad thing. You might seriously consider the "you need a girlfriend" advice. But don't try the toothbrush thing with the girlfriend . . . of course there are some girls that . . . never mind, forget I said anything.

Sorry, send me your address and I'll send you a free car wash coupon.
