So brought it home a few days ago flushed the fluids, changed the oil and filter, fuel filter, spark plugs, battery, soldered up my new panasonic deck, did a compression test and my drivers side middle piston is about 20 lbs light and i am getting this annoying low rpm ticking. Really concerned i think it might just be a sticky rocker because it has been sitting for about 2 years. Any ways after i figure that out i want to build a box for a l7 sub that i can get off my brother for free and thinking about removing the calayctic converter and putting in a cherry bomb glass pack and i dont know what i want for a tip i got the 3 liter v6 and i dont want it to be really high pitch any help or project suggestions greatly appreciated

Okay so it sounds like i should buy a catylictic converter and the cherry bomb turbo just a few concerns the turbo has two pipes and im trying to keep this first ranger pretty cheap the pipe im buying is 10 bucks for 18inches would i be able to put a y on that muffler and single pipe it trying to stay under 150 bucks

I would recommend leaving the cat intact, and modifying after that. It will help keeping the truck in bearable sound ranges. As far as a tick and low pressure, I couldn't tell you. I will bet someone on here can though!

Its got 160,000 some odd miles on it judging by your profile, a little tick is not unheard of for a 3.0, not exactly an advanced motor.

Removing the cat is a federal offense

Even in Canada.

Leave it be. You won't see any benefits from taking it out and your engine will run better with it in place anyway.

Actually, thats not true in at least some of canada. I live in Saskatchewan and my muffler shop actually offered to remove it when i was going to redo my exhaust. But i also do not think you should remove it. From what i hear, it can even make your engine run worse sometimes. That and the environmental issue (which we are seeing the effects more and more) does not really make it worth the tiny bit more rumble.

But, it isnt unheard of either for the cat to be clogged a bit. If you are going to redo the exhaust, you could get a new cat or something to help. Im no expert, but i've been exactly where you are now and this is just what i have learned over the time it took to figure out this stuff :P

Do not put a glass pack on a ranger. It will sound like a rice-o-matic. I went with a cherry bomb turbo muffler with 2.25" tubing. Super cheap, quieted it right down and dosen't sound bad. A little more throaty than stock exhaust.

You will know if a cat gets clogged. It will glow red hot at night and the truck won't get out of its own way.

I had a 24" Thrush glass pack on mine for a while. Sounded pretty good. But then, I gave it the "hot prep" treatment. Pour a little kerosene down in it before you put it on and it burns the glass out.

I am in canada so there are no noise restrictions and i know for a fact the catylictic converter is extremely dirty and i am not getting good airflow

everyones gonna tell you ra ra ra emissions this and that, but ill just say "hypothetically speaking, if i were in your position, chances are id gut that bitch" yeap im gonna get some crap for this. in advance- :thefinger:

Ya i dont want to sound like a little import car i am open to suggestion trust me but i honestly dont want to spend much if i put a 3 inch boom tube on the end would that sound worse becuase i have heard i will deepen it alot ok and just to verify becuase my ranger is not at my house right now its at my grandparents 2hours away just to verify the stock pipe is 2inch correct
?

yes stock pipe is 2". a flowmaster 40 or 50 series wouldnt be too too bad... i think those turbo mufflers are mild and pretty free flowing too

In NH if its an '85 you can yank the cat they dont care about them on '85 or older here but thats just this back asswards states law lol. But to the OP yeah I'd do a turbo muffler last time i put a glasspack on a 6 it sounded like a damn john deere tractor tust me the ladies arent impressed (well my ex was but she was a farm girl) and you get really dirty looks from everyone especially those with a badge

Thank You

I am very happy with all your replies greatly appreciated so im taking this glass pack back tommorow and buy that turbo or a extreme any tip ideas? boom tube or just a down pipe im not sure i just dont want to sound like the douche bag who wants to just be loud you know and as far as the cat dunno pretty sure its coming off as far as the engine well i paid 850 for it so......

Update

Fixed the tick with a engine cleanout product and took it to the muffler shop and i have a appitnment for a magnaflow to go in on wedensday
