got an oil change today and it was not pleasent

so i go to valvoline to get my oil changed and have my rearend greased and new tranny fluid. Well first the guy asked for all my info, name,address, etc. The guy in underneath my ranger asks where the drain plug, i had to show him which right away grinded my gears haha. Second he asked where the filter was i shoed him and he couldnt get it with the band wrench so i just said eff it and grabbed it and took it off myself. Then moving to my rear end the guy drains it and puts rearend grease/fluid in and on to the tranny fluid. He drained and there werent any to a little bit of fillings in it and he goes you might wanna get your tranny looked at and i was like why? it shifts nice and clean no clunks. he tells me that there were a ton of shavings in it and i was like well whatever since im not gunna argue with him. Put the tranny fluid in then i get the bill $90 i was pissed considering i did half of it myself because they didnt know squat never again will i go to get an oil change ill do it all myself and it will be cheaper

You took it to a chain shop and you are surprised that they couldn't figure out even the simple things, and didn't know what they were doing?

At least you are gonna start doing it yourself from now on.

well i figured it would be quick considering i had to be back to the shop bc i was suppossed to meet a guy because we had his tranny donw and chain shop? what do you mean by that

Those Valvoline shops are chain stores, like Jiffy lube or McDonald's.

well ours here is a car shop they have 3 drive in stalls and the basement with the oil slide bucket for cars?

Yeah, that's how the one back home is too. They couldn't find a hole in the ground either.

I only take my truck there when I need it to pass inspection and I know there is something that should fail.

Dood, I ALWAYS use a shop that I know is capable. In fact, it's the same place that does ALL of my tire and suspension work.

They check all my fluids, brakes, etc.. and only charge me $30.00. They do my Miata, they did my Evo and now are doing my Ranger.

I NEVER let a chain touch any of my vehicles. I was in Chicago and saw a guy at a stop light, his drain plug was obviously loose or missing because oil was pouring out from his drain plug. I assumed it was the fine work you get at the chains.

Damn.....where did this Hillbilly come from?? His older sister's womb??? I have never heard of this before. I have taken a lot of our vehicles to independent oil change centers and have never had this happen!!! All I can say is WOW!!!!!!!

Geeze, cut the guy some SLACK. MAYBE he was new. You CANNOT base your opinions on a place just by the performance of one person. The only thing this proves is:

1. The training program needs probed.

2. The guy might not been familiar with your vehicle.

IMO, around here the "lube shops" are hurting very badly, since the economic downturn, the only time I see them busy is on Sunday Afternoons. I seriously feel for those guys, as Lube Shops WILL be the future, it is essential that they train the technicians.

In fact if I were you, do that Valvoline Lube center a favor, GIVE THEM A CHANCE TO MAKE IT RIGHT. Report the issue with the branch so it does not happen in the future.... and good thing you knew where the drain plug was, with dipstickless engines, who knows.

I hate to break it to you, but as the cars become more complex and proprietary with the scan tool functions, dealerships will be the future. Lube shops are simply ill equipped to diagnose or service many current electronic systems.

you're absolutely right about that-the local repair shop runs into stuff all the time that can't be done without the speciallised equip,and it's a four day trek to the closest dealership.P.I.T.A......everyone here should stick to 90's cars

I have four Ford dealerships within 20 minutes driving distance and I still think people should stick to 90s cars.
