Its probably a stupid question:

A buddy of mine has a 2007 Ford F150. Alternator just went out. He said it has over 36,000 miles so the basic warranty is done, but the Drivetrain warranty should still be good. Are alternators covered under Ford's Drivetrain warranty? I'm guessing not, but I'd rather him not have to shell out $600 to get it done at a small shop if he can get a Ford tech to do it for free. Thanks.

Alt's are not covered under drive train warranty . Does he have any ESP coverage ?

Parts should not be more than $150, why not do it yourself?

What's ESP? I don't know where he got $600 from either, I'm guessing its mostly labor, I would have figured the price to be closer to $400 though. He claims that the alternator is really difficult to get to on his truck, so he doesn't want to bother fixing it himself, plus I only have a basic tool kit, he has no tools. Looks like I'm going to have to give him a ride to work until next payday.

yeah...... alternator replacement is pretty simple, shouldnt require mor than a socket wrench and some elbow grease.

I just thought about it. The alternator is driven by the serpentine belt, it shouldn't be that difficult to replace. I'm going to try convince him to let me help him fix it next time we're off.

What engine does he have? There's a hell of a lot of room under the hood of them things. I don't know what he think's so difficult?

5.4L V8. I'm not sure either. I don't think he even has money for the alternator itself though. I'll look into it for him within the next couple days.

I was simply making a point of it's stupid to pay outrageous dealer prices for something so simple to do.

Rockauto has them for $164.

We don't have a rockauto out here. We have O'Reilly auto parts, Carquest and dealerships. The $600 he was quoted was not from a dealer, but from one of the most reputable privately owned shops in town. But I agree, I'd much rather pay the price of the part plus $2/hour to use the tools at the auto hobby shop than part plus $70/hour.

Not saying it is hard to do, but depending on where it's located it could be a pain the ass. The 2nd of the dual alternators on a 6.4L is a bottom/side mount and it can be a difficult job to remove/replace.

But anything over $300 to replace is robbery.
