So I've been doing an internship this summer at Extreme Tool in Wakefield, MI (my home town). We make injection molds for a lot of products (MANY Nokia cell phones, the smart straw cap for WD40, some other stuff).

Tuesday I get an e-mail from the GM, he says to meet with him and the president to talk about my future. So I go in, they pretty much tell me that I've been doing a great job, everyone likes working with me, and they'd like to offer me a job :shok: I still have two years of school left, but the pay they're offering me is right in line with what I wanted to make coming out of school, with full bennies.

As of right now, I'm training on a HAAS 3-axis CNC, and it looks like they're going to eventually move that to our other building and get a new 5-axis in the old building. After I'm fully trained, I'm going to move to the other building and run the CNC, do the programming for it, and do a little bit of engineering.

I'm not really sure what to think right now, I'm happy as hell because I got the job that I wanted, and don't have to finish school. Kinda bummed because I wanted that piece of paper, but I figure I can always go back.

So yeah, finally got me a good job. I'm getting there already, guess it won't be too much longer and I'll be this guy in the morning :c-n:

Sweet! It is a great feeling knowing you have a job when you get out of school.

An internship is always a good way to get a job easier, as it shows that you can work in the field that you are studying in. You might even get to work on your major school breaks to get some advance training and extra cash too...Keep the grades up and congratz on the job!

There are some risks here.

There are A LOT of folks lying around who say "I can always go back," but never do. It's a lot harder to pull off than it sounds.

This is what an internship is supposed to be for, but if I were you, I'd try to work out finishing a degree as part of the deal.

Difficult choice....

Getting the OJT on the machines they have at work isn't always easy to come by while earning a decent check at the same time.

On the other hand (as mentioned), a lot of dedication is required to get your butt back in school.....unforseen events financial and such (like the stork accidentally showing up) prevent a lot of folks from going back.

I know what I'd do, but what would YOU do?

The company I'm working for will pay 100% for schooling if I decide to go back while still working there. They also have an engineering office in the town where my college is, so I could work there if I decide to go back. We were figuring I could give it a year and see how it goes, and if I really want to I could finish my degree.

Nothing is final as of yet, paperwork is being done this week, but it's looking really good right now.

Sounds awesome to me. Congrats man.

I would go for it honestly. But I would really go for finishing off school as soon as possible.

I was that way right out of high school. I wanted to take a year off before i started again. Been 4 years now lol. But I am almost right where I want to be. Worked 3 w/2 years in construction and that gave me ALOT of experience. Now i manage my friends race shop and manage his landscaping company. My main dream is to own my own offroad shop. But with the plan my friend has I will open my own race shop under his company. So it might work out after all. I am getting paid more than I expected, and loving what I do.

But I still wish I had the degree to back me up. But with the experience I have you never know. I still want to go back to school and at least get a degree in business managment as a back up. But with as busy as I have been with work and off time I really don't know.

All I can say is don't get caught up with it all like I kinda am and miss out on getting a degree as back up. You never know if that job will last forever.

with this economy, all kinds of people are getting layed off. right now it sounds good but in 6 month to a year the company could take a dump. id finish the degree. when hiring, people prefer the one who can be commited and a degree is proof.

I say go for the Job but continue to take a class or two in the evenings or what ever will fit into your schedule. That way your still working towards your degree and making a living at the same time.

The company is growing very rapidly, just opened up a shop in Mexico, a sister company in China, and an engineering office in the town where my college is. If I decide that I'd like to get my degree, if I'm still working for them they will pay for it 100%. I know a LOT of people who have a degree and never use it. If shit hits the fan it shouldn't be too much of a hassle.

I wish I could take evening classes, but there's nothing around me for that.

Regardless, congratulations on the offer. It is indeed something to be very proud of. I do hope that it's easy for you to make your own choice, on what you're going to do, and best of luck to you.

Congrats on the offer... Are they willing to let you finish school? I graduated high school and said I would start college in the fall, that was 6 years ago.

Don't stop now, your used to it, finish it up.

good deal, sounds like my friend that was in my class, he works for General Electric, started in as a temp, they fully hired him and fired all the other temps a week later haha, hes makin some good money and he doesnt have his degree yet but hes still taking classes. i have 3 classes left till i get my machine tool degree as well, and when i go back home next spring i got a job lined up where ill be trained on a 5 axis Okuma, congrats though!:icon_thumby:

Congrats...

I wouldn't take the "can't go back stuff" too seriously...i've been back to school several times...first time when I was 28 attending classes with 18 year olds...second time when I was 38 attending classes with 18 year olds...now at 52 attending classes with 18 year olds...

If you want to, you can always go back...but I'd look into the option to work towards the degree while working...it takes a bit more out of you but it is worth it if you decide to move elsewhere and have to compete with those who have a degree and work experience...

Mark, you're the exception, not the rule.

It's a lot harder to go back once you have a life, perhaps a mortgage, marriage, and/or kid with a $15,000 daycare bill. Even without those, Jspafford's experience is the norm.

+1

Get the degree. I just graduated with a B.A. in poli sci, and although I'm not using atm, I will be using it once I go for what I really want to do: professional translation. And I will always have the degree to back me up.
