so i bought a gallon of rotella T6 a bottle of lucas, a Mobil 1 filter, and changed my oil
after fighting with the motorcraft filter for a half hour, i got the bastard off and chunked it, primed the mobile 1 with lucas, poured the T6 into the engine, and cranked it up.

no oil pressure.

tapped the gas a little to get the oil flowing.

no pressure.

i smelled burning, screamed "oh darn" and shut the engine off.

under my truck was a gallon of rotella T6.

unscrewed the filter because i thought it popped, and what do i see on top of it?

TWO EFFING GASKETS. The damn motorcraft gasket stuck to the damn engine and made me blow out 30 dollars in oil.

So i go back to the store, pick up a gallon of conventional rotella (since i had to scrape the change drawer as i'd spent all my budgeted oil money on the first batch of oil.

filled the truck back up, cranked it up.

now it won't shut up, all manner of valve-train noise.

Good night sweet cologne, we hardly knew ye.

it'll still run. when you get the chance get some lucas oil stabilizer in there. it might be able to quiet it down.

unless you left out the part about taking the truck for a drive around town, running for that amount of time shouldn't do much, if any damage. I've seen engines take a LOT worse...including a coworker doing the exact same thing on a Camry, didn't catch it before it left the shop, guy drove a mile home and a mile back, still had 2 out of 5 quarts left in the pan and no damage, even valve train noise.

it may of just emptied the lifters, when i rebuild my brothers 3000gt it tapped for awhile then shut up.

give'er an extral 10% lucas and let it idle for a few minutes. You probably did empty the lifters and now they are just needing a minute to pump up again. I ran my oldsmobile 30 miles to work once with 1 quart in it. thats a 4 quart engine. it still holds oil pressure.

You pumped air into the lifters, it'll take sevral sessions of idling and driving it around to get it back out.

It is not a complete disaster, consider it a learning experience.

I'll bet you a gallon of Mobil1 that you'll never forget to CHECK & VERIFY that you didn't leave the filter gasket behind, by BOTH checking the take off filter AND running your thumb across the filter mount.

I'll match that wager. Did that once to a customer's car during my first week in the shop almost 4 years ago. Haven't forgotten to chec the gaskets since.

Yeah its always a good idea to check for the gasket first. and I always start up my trucks and look right under to see if its leaking at all. You probably didn't hurt the engine too bad unless you let it idle for like 5-10 minutes without oil.

so, it's freezing ass cold out, the windshield was iced over, and i cranked up the truck, let it idle for 15 minutes than drove it up the road and back.

heater only works higher than idle, so i gotta get the air out of the system tomorrow, but the engine is the quietest it's ever been for as long as i've owned the truck, oil pressure is 18 pounds at warmed-up idle after a trip up the road, and 50-55 at highway speeds.

seafoaming the oil before i drained the old oil out must have helped out with clearing some sludge
