any suggestions?
i have a 96 2.3 ranger and although it drives fine, i feel that it is a tad bit underpowered
im not looking for anything crazy but something that would boost the midrange some more
future mods include custom intake, full custom exhaust and a tune

All of the 2.3 liters are "a tad bit underpowered". If you want power out of a 2.3 then put a turbo on it. But other then that they are motors made for good fuel economy and getting around. As for the upgrades you want to do, they really wont give a power boost.

It all depends on how much you want to spend, I have a 2300 in a 1600lb pulling tractor putting out 250 hp. hp isnt cheap on these things I have around 5000.00 in my motor but it has gobs of power.:icon_thumby:

I started by replacing the stock air filter with a K&N in the stock air cleaner. The truck was new at the time and I install the K&N in the store parking lot. I accidentally laid three scratches while leaving. It took a day tell I got the feel of the new throttle response. I just cleaned the filter for the third time yesterday it now has 194000 miles on it. :icon_hornsup:

turbo coupe cam works well if you have a carb

We run a 2.5 ranger now at the track,a 1/2 mile asphalt oval.We have wacked the head and block 30 thousandths, bored 40 over, cleaned up the crank and rods.Running a good flat top piston. We are running the stock head and cam.We run red top injectors with a sligthly modified MAF.A ram air system.Running 4.10 gears in 4th turning about 5500 at the end of the straights.4 wins this year and a second. When we started,we had about 115 hp on the dyno and with the add ons,we are now running 167.We have about $1800.00 in the motor. With a good cam and some porting(illegal)we feel we could get 180-190 hp.Motor runs fine, idles fine and could easily drop in a street truck.
