Hey folks,
I blew the motor in my 1998 Ranger, 3.0 v6 manual, 4x4 at 221,000 miles. I have not tired taring the motor apart, but believe there multiple things wrong and I really do not have the time to try to fix everything to exact specs.
I found someone in my area trying to sell a 2000 Ranger chassis, pretty much everything is there expect the cab, bed and bumpers. The motor is a 3.0 v6, manual, 4x4 with 116k miles. The guy told me the truck was a roll over and they scrapped the cab and bed but told me the engine ran fine. He is wanting $500 for everything and I am trying to talk him down to $350 right now. The only concerns I had was that the radiator had some sludge in it. He had jacked the radiator off and I ran my finger across the inside of it and had some oily thick gunk. The motor has also been sitting outside in the weather for about a month, but the motor oil looked fine other than being jet black. Everything appeared to have been disconnected and all wires that were cut were sliced on cab side of the connection, meaning I should be able to plug everything into my truck. The A/C compressor was missing and no serpentine belt, the fuel line leading to the fuel rail also had a break in it and I cannot tell if it was cut or smashed from the wreck. Everything else on the truck appeared to be untouched, the drive train looked good and the frame did not have any obvious deformities.
Do you think this would be a good buy? I am a little nervous about buying a motor I cannot see running and the gunk in the radiator makes me concerned about the head gaskets. How much work would be involved to change the head gaskets while I had the motor out? Should I also drop a new clutch in while its out? Should I be concerned about the motor being out in the weather for a month?
Anyhow, thanks for any pointers or advice.
Philip
