Good mid-range, general purpose shocks?

I have a RWD '99 XLT supercab and I'm mostly convinced I have front and rear shocks that are original equipment at the 100K mile mark. I plan to replace them soon and was looking for advice finding average shocks that won't break the bank. Also, how hard is it to swap out shocks, is it something a novice could potentially do or does it need to be done by a shop?

Average shocks would be whatever is cheapest at your local parts store, probably Monroe or something. Most shocks aren't expensive.

Does said novice have tools and common sense? If not you could watch a YouTube video of how to do it. Honestly taking the pressure off the springs is the hard/dangerous part. Other than that it's just bolts you loosen. It's not hard at all so long as you have the tools and common sense when dealing with spring pressure. Is it torsion bar or springs up front?

I haven't worked on newer than 91 rangers so maybe some things changed, but there is nothing to changing shocks.
@ killjoy; Springs aren't a concern as they aren't touched when changing shocks. Perhaps you are thinking of MacPherson struts.

I've seen monroe shocks for dirt cheap at local auto parts stores. Do you guys think I'd be alright with a mid to upper end monroe shock?

You know what you're right, sorta I was thinking the last time I changed mine and it was when I put in my life so yup changed my springs lol. My bad so you're right nothing to it really. I think I was tipsy when I posted lol

For everyday driving I've never had a problem with them. They are supposed to be oem specs or better usually. They usually come with lifetime warranty so if you don't like then you could just return them and get something better.
