I just picked up a 1993 ford ranger 4.0 autotragic 4x4 I'm really big into the desert scene and have built quite a few Rangers for personal use and other people. All that I have done has been 2wd stuff I finally got tired of looking at a road and saying damn I wish this was 4x4 or watching my friends and family with 4x4s climb up hills that I couldn't. Now on to my questions I do a lot of fairly high speed off-roading 50+ through whoops and across just about anything I can find around vegas so I want this truck to be a multipurpose vehicle I'll be building 6 over d35 ttbs with d44 knuckles and rcv axles up front but I'm not sure what to do about the transfer case I'd like to be able to run 55-60mph through sand and silt with 4x4 engaged I know that will be hell on the factory transfer case so what are my options ideally I'd like it to still have a low range for when I'm up hunting and just want to crawl around the mountains as well.

I don't know why that would be any harder than rock-crawling. Tho I've done neither crawling or high speed desert. I do race my 91 4x4 in a short course style and have had no problems so far. I get up to 50 mph.

As long as your axles are geared correct for your tire size, the stock T-case should be fine at any speed (it's a pretty rugged unit).

As I understand it, most guys who run at high speed do so in 2WD anyway, only using 4WD at slower speeds when they need it. It's not hard to shock-load the front drivetrain and have something break upon a landing... plus you can't get a very good "broadie" going while in 4WD either, though maybe that can work to your advantage too, not sure (I don't do a whole lot of high-speed driving myself, mostly just trail driving and crawling).

Well the truck as it sits has 4.88s with 35s so fairly close to stock ratio after the tire change. The only time I'd be in 4x4 is when I'm going through silt or sand realistically the rest of my 4x4 adventures will be low speed all around the mountains where I hunt. I've thought about going d44s up front but i can't justify re purchasing everything I already have plus the loss of bump travel and making me have a higher ride height.

With your stock trans it is all downhill from your t-case unless you have someone make you an adaptor. Nothing fullsize will readily swap onto your trans.

Advance Adaptor makes adaptors to go the other way (RBV t-case on a fullsize trans)... you might check with them for sure.
