gm vs ford plug in hybrids

I still think Hybreds are a sucker bet.

You will NEVER make the extra cost back.

Plug-in hybrids are even worse because the power grid isn't setup to handle them.

I think they make more sense than a dedicated plug in electric. At least you are not totally helpless if you need to go out of town.

Unless you can afford a Tesla, not worth it.

The only hybrid concept I have seen that I think is even remotely worthwhile is the setup used by Chrysler on the Wrangler concept.

Electric motor drove the vehicle, a little two cylinder generator providing power for it.

I would be thinking more along the lines of a 428 cobra jet engine myself ...:D

Greg

I was thinking of a 13-14 Boss for me. :D

6 of one, half dozen of the other. Either way you are not stuck somewhere for hours wating for a recharge.

Yes, but it gets better mileage because there is no direct link between the engine and wheels.

That's how the train guys do it.

It would be a lot simpler on a train vs running driveshafts to all the wheels.

The point of the link is extra ompff on demand when you need it.

That is how submarine guys do it.

That's interesting you would say that, my boss (who ironically drives a caddy) and I were having that conversation a while back. I agree, if you're in the market for a car in the $13k range and say "well I'll save some gas money if I spend a little more" and buy a $20k Prius. But for people like my boss who would buy a $35k car then maybe spending that money instead on some sort of hybrid would make sense.

Of course a comparable hybrid will always cost more than it's non-hybrid counterpart, so I get where you're coming from. TBH I'm skeptical even with better MPGs they are better for the environment with the batteries being only good for a few years.

They were working on motors that would fit on each wheel. Rather than 1 motor you would have 4. The only problem they were having was the added unsprung weight at the wheel. Think about it true 4 wheel drive with instant torque and can have the speed limited to a crawl.

Lincoln MKZ hybrid has the same starting price as the regualr gasoline model. There is no "extra cost." Your point is invalid.

Furthermore, it's absurd to make blanket statements like that. What's cost effective and practical for one person may be never pay off for another.
