Swaping in a gm 200 amp alt. can I hook my original charge wire directly to the batt and rum a heavier ga. wire from alt to batt? Im not worried about the ammeter not working.

Don't see why not. You can always put in an aftermarket ammeter and voltmeter later. When you get her done throw up a pic of the bracket setup you made up for it.

Here is a link I would read through before I did the install. Might save you some grief and give you a couple handy ideas. http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billavista/Wiring/Part2/

I think the main thing is that you run at least an 8 gauge wire. I didn't run one to the battery on mine. I ran it to the hot side of the starter solenoid (1970) I had to have a bracket extension made to keep mine in the factory position (to the left exactly 1.5 inches) to clear the heads.

I just used the factory ford bracket with a spacer on the botom bolt behind the ear of the alternator. i think the spacer was about 7/8ths of an inch. I didnt measure it. I just kept grinding it down to fit...oh I had to drill the alternators lower ear to accept the factory ford bolt.

That info helped me too.....My alternator BATT.+ wire was not 8 gaguge & the insulation on the wire was starting to warp---the wire was getting hot!

Thanks Men!
