Global warming or mini ice-age??

Astrologers in almost every country have predicted that on 12/21/20012, the Sun will be in alignment with the center of our galaxy for the first time in more than 5000 years, and that our moon will be in eclips at the same time. (the two events have never happened together before) At the same time, our planet completes a rotational (wobble) cycle bringing it almost horizontal to the plane of the galaxy.

Theory is that this could cause some odd gravitational effects, and create "signiificant" tidal action.

Mayans were not the only ones to predict this. They state that it won't be the end of everything, but the start of something new. Regardless of that, global disasters happen. They've happened, and always will happen. It's best to just not worry about, obviously we wouldn't have any control over it anyway.

Oh jeez.

The sun is in Sagittarius (the center of the galaxy) every December. Lunar eclipses happen somewhere on the globe several times a year. That this is the "first" time both have happened in December is just plain BS. The last total lunar eclipse during Sagittarius occurred in 1993 (29 Nov), and we survived it. If that's too far for you, another total lunar eclipse occurred on 9 Dec, 1992, and another on 20 Dec., 1983, and yet another on 30 Dec., 1982. I really think that if the world had ended four times over in the last 25 years, I would have noticed. And even more amusingly, the 21 Dec. total lunar eclipse will take place TWO YEARS TOO EARLY, in 2010. Oops.

Given that the mass of the galaxy is about 100 million solar masses and the center is some 8000 light years (about 80 million AU) away and gravity is inverse-square (TIDAL gravity -- gravity that's different on one part of the planet than on others due to a remote object -- is inverse cube), it's VERY easy to calculate how much gravitational force we get from the center of the galaxy (even assuming all the mass is in the center, which overestimates its contribution some) as compared to the sun. Do this before believing the astrological BS.

As for "every" culture predicting 21 Dec 2012 is the end of the "world," no. The MAYAN calendar ends there. That's it. And nothing special is going to happen. I'll place a $100 bet with any takers that most of us are still alive on 22 Dec 2012.

If you want to screw with gravity on the Earth, you have to mess with the moon or the sun. NOTHING else is remotely significant.

Some nuctase predicts the end of the world several times a year. Last I checked, we were all still here...

PLEASE be a bit more discriminating about what "science" you disseminate. Yes, that includes the climate change stuff. Picking one scientist out of some 8000 who says what you want to hear is a bit, well, disingenuous.

Oh jeez. ...

They had it on the History Channel so it has to be true:icon_thumby:

Really I think it is a hype kind of like the Y2K thing, aside from the fact that few people really care about it.

my dad told me same thing, maybe 2012?

Tell your dad to read his bible. "No one knows the day or hour". I tend to believe, therefore, that no one really knows the end except the Creator.

And global warming? Ha!! So the temperature has gained 1/4 of a degree in 100 years? BFD!!!! I'll turn my air conditioner up (or down as the case may be) a little more. Al Gore is a hypocrite. When he stops flying around in private jets and turns HIS A/C off, I'll consider watching him sweat... until then he has no credibility as he doesn't practice what he preaches.

snake, if your neighbor told you you shouldn't jump off cliffs, and then did so, would you follow him?

Warming is likely to be exponential. 1/4 deg in the last 100 years means it is measurable (i.e., not made up like quite a lot of people try to claim), and it will be much more than that in the next 100 years.

And you'll never correct the rainfall and snowfall patterns by turning up your A/C.

As far as the religious aspect goes...I have had my share of religious bullshit at a funeral already today...

To me the problem is simple. Overpopulation. Combine that with your industrialized nations and what do you expect? There will come a time when this thing that you all are calling BS will come to bite mankind in the ass.

Are you agreeing that al gore is a BS artist with this first statement? Please clarify...

I agree about the A/C not correcting anything. I was demonstrating absurdity by being absurd. If we got 1/4 of a degree the first 100 years, and 1 "whole" degree in the second 100, does this mean we're doomed? And what if it starts cooling off in the next 100, I guess we have to spend billions to figure out why that happened too I suppose.

And as far as religeous things go to those who made comments, you can learn a lot from the Bible. Not saying you should or getting into your business- it is your choice to be an atheist or whatever you happen to be. We'll just have to wait to see if biblical prophesy comes true. I, for one, happen to believe in it. Lots of evidence that we are entering into the early stages of revelations...

No, Al Gore is not a BS artist. He's a hypocrite. The distinction is quite important. Much of what he said DOES agree with the science.

If you aren't worried about a few degrees, read up on the "dust bowl." That's what happens when regional weather patterns shift. A few degrees will do that.

And yes, if unexplained cooling took place, it would be massively stupid not to try to understand it. Small changes in global climate can make very large differences in our lives, such as the sustainability of crops and the hydrologic cycle. You can write that off as God punishing you, or you can try to be intelligent about it and head it off before it gets too bad.

depends on your opinion of good old al,i think he is now as he was then,"an insignifigant little turd"

Im not saying I believe that about the Mayans, I simply knew what they were referring to, so I quoted it from another site.

I believe facts that can be proven, not just what somebody says.

Well, peoples- today is a record-breaking -40 degree day in Minnesooooota. Might be the beginning of the ice-age again. Damn global warming.

MAKG, thanks for agreeing that al is a hypocrite. Nothing worse than someone peeing on your head and telling you its raining.

But are you saying people who believe in God aren't intellegent, or just that science should investigate everything (at taxpayer expense) for the sake of the investigation?

I'm saying that a potential catastrophic problem should be investigated. Yes, at taxpayer expense; it affects all of us. Or would you rather trust a profit-generating corporation to do it? Like, say, Exxon-Mobil? Whether you believe in God or not. The only stupid part of that would be forsaking the investigation in misguided faith that God will do it for you.

The only thing I wonder about now in our recent discussion is the part where you said "head it off before it becomes too bad". What are we going to do about it? Let the EPA regulate everything (like the new diesel "air scrubber" engines mandated by 2010) so this country can be "green" while mexico and everywhere else couldn't care less and pollutes like a mo-fo?

We own some of these new DPF diesels up in Wisconsin- the first one burned 92 gallons of fuel through its filter during the regeneration process in the first 15,000 miles of operation- none of which were used to propel the truck. Are you in favor of these systems that piss away tons of natural resources in the name of "clean air"? Does the EPA think those 92 gallons burned up without polluting any air? The truck cost $7000 more to buy, plus it gets worse mileage than our older trucks because of the EGR put into place in 2004, now this DPF crap. The 2003's didn't pollute very much, so the question is, is all this really worth it? Open your wallet my friend, because these costs are being passed on to you.
