My credo
Work hard and play harder
I work for a major university here in Indy. I have since went back to school at night to get my BS in Electronic and Communications Engineering. I was working days and was switched to nights for this rotation until an undetermined time (staffing issues). I normally do my absolute best to meet all the needs of my employer. I have a class on Fridays now when we are at minimum manning. Since I am part time I do not fall under the regular educational policy for my office.

With that being said, I asked if I could make up the 4 hrs that I would be missing some other time during the week. I have bent over backwards for this place to keep my classes on days I report in at 2100. I was met with the following response: I can’t really give you an answer regarding make up time until your final schedule is set, but in all likelihood I wouldn’t count on it.

Now with that being said as well, when do I catch a break and they work with me. I am losing money in this situation. I have bills to pay like everyone else. It just seems like I go out of my way to where I do not lose any money and now that I am they are giving me a big funk you. As I sit here typing this I am getting more upset and pissed off about the situation.

I think it is time to find another job. What do you guys think?

Is it a good, high paying job that you might want to stick with or is it something that you are just paying the bills with? If it's just to pay the bills I'd start looking for a job now, then when you find one or they fire you for missing too much time then you go on to the next one. I find it odd though that you work for a university and they can't accomadate your school schedule. Might want to take it up with a higher level manager?

I agree with Mazda on this. Check with your supervisor and see if they can talk to the people in charge.

Don't understand how a Major University couldn't help out a employee just a little... sucks to try to go the extra mile at work and then when you need a little help they leave you out to dry. I would try to talk to someone higher up and see what you can do and if they just totally dick you around then start looking for another job and if you can find a new one for higher pay then just leave.

The response I posted is from the supervisor in charge of staffing. I am just going to start looking for a better paying job.

Talk to the prof, and if necessary the dean. Explain the situation to them and ask if there is any way that you can make up that one class you would be missing each week by sitting in on another section. I grew up on college campuses and in my experience in a situation like that many times they will be willing to work with you when your boss isn't.

How close are you to being finished?

Are you getting a reduction in enrollment fees at all by being an employee? If so, then it might be best to stick it out until you're done. If not, might be time to start looking.

I should get my 2nd associates hopefully by the end of this quarter. My BS is September of 2011.

Since I am part time I do not get an educational benefit like a full time employee.

For further clarification I do not attend school at my employer. I go to ITT Tech because I am working with a time table. Cut off age for officers for the Air Force is 33. Thinking about possibly going back as an officer.

Well I have decide that once I get my BS degree I am going back to the AF as an officer hopefully. Time to start training like I mean it.

Ah, that makes a bit of difference. Yeah, ditch 'em if you can find somewhere else.

I worked a 50 hour week fulltime salaried everything for Swift Transportation. When I tried to enroll for my second semester one class only had a 930-1230 opening. I needed it for fulltime to get my GIbill. When i explained to my employer the situation they said no. I told him I wasnt trying to be rude but I wanted him to speak to the next higher director. They said no too.

What I based my decision to quit on was this. There was no room for promotion and no room to move laterally. The only was to advance my self WAS to go to school. So I politely resigned and went my way.

HOWEVER, The army GIBill paid me 100 dollars more each month than my salaried job. If you paying for school out of pocket then your best bet is to wait one semester and take the class when its a better time for you and your employer. Unless you already have another job lined up.
