Ive been looking for something to build and have wanted a foxbody stang but cant really find anything worth building. i finally found a cheap one that has what i want but it has no title, the car is in illinois and im in arkansas. is there anyway to get it titled in my name.

fyi its a 1982 mustang gt t-top hatchback, with motor and trans.

There are ways to do it. You need to start by finding out what your (and their) local laws are, and why there is no title.

Around here you can get a new one generated. You just need to be sure there aren't any leins on it, it isn't branded, or reported stolen by someone who isn't the seller.

Our DOT can get that information with just the VIN.

in the state of Illinois there are 3 ways.
1 if the vehicle is owned by the person it is registered to they can file for a lost title. at the same time they can fill out a power of attorney form and have the title come back in your name.

2 get a bonded title through an insurance company. this involves getting the car appraised.

3 take the car to a licensed rebuilder. they will have to get a certificate of purchase first then salvage title for a fee and then get a rebuilt title for another fee and then you can get a title in your name for another fee

The way I got the title for my Bronco II:

It belonged to my buddy's grandpa who died. The title was lost in roughly 1998 and it sat in a shed in North Dakota until July 2009. I brought it back to South Dakota. I had to send a certified letter stating my intentions to the previous owner, who obviously didn't get it. It was returned to me undelivered. I took it to the court house unopened, filled out an application for a title, and three weeks later I had a clean title in my name.

Maybe the same will work for you - assuming that the title was just lost. Could have a title loan on it, could be stolen, have liens on it - who knows. Do a lot of research about your options first... talk to your DMV... and certainly don't pay much for it.
