I've read, read, and read on how to do these. I've seen fords awesome ideas on spark plugs and whatnot in the f-150's. I know that the sohc 4.0 sparkplug placement is less than impressive. So, before all this i ran a can of techron through the system to help, i've read that in order to do this i need to go through the wheel wells and have time on my hand. I plan on doing this sometime over the week. I'm going to get dad's BII moved out of the way so i can get my plugs changed. It's been shuddering and missing on startup recently and has 134k on what are believed to be original plugs. I got platinum motorcafts, and motorcraft wires. Tips, ideas, or good lucks would be appreciated! :icon_cheers:

Changing the 4.0 SOHC spark plugs is not all that bad. The driver's side can be accessed from the top. The passenger side is best with the tire and wheel well flap (if you have one) removal.

I have replaced mine twice and had no problem. Since yours have been in there 134K miles, they may be more difficult to remove. It is good to replace the wires one at a time so you don't get the firing order mixed up. I like to use dielectric grease or silicone spray in the spark plug boots to lubricate, seal and protect from corrosion.

The plugs have nothing in common with the really long 2 piece plugs that break apart on the 3v 5.4's.

I think they have more threads in the head than the ones that strip out on the 2v's too.

I have never done one but I have heard no widespread problems like the struggles with the mod motors.

I know they are single piece plugs, but i have seen single piece plugs break too. I dont want that. I dunno why people were so upset about blowing plugs in the 2v's. Torque them and you're good...

On the bright side dad got his BII moved and there is room in the shop! :yahoo:

Well got it done, i will say it needed done. Plugs were spec'ed to be at .053-.058 the ones i removed were at .080-.087! :shok: The passenger side wasn't exactly a walk in the park. The thing that really upset me in this was my new plug wires were junk.

Torque them right, too loose and they bet on the threads until they strip, too tight and you strip them outright.

Your dad get the BII running or just moved?
