I have a 1986 ranger with carburetor it has a MCU. My question is can I replace the MCU? If so how and where do I get the parts? This may be an electrical question wasn't sure. I am assuming it is called the MCU. The passenger front fender has a square plastic electrical receptical on top. The electrical plug attached to it has many wires coming from the drivers side of the engine.

That's an Idle Control Module (ICM) and you can replace it...I replaced mine because I thought it was the issue...didn't help...

If you have the original setup on the carb then you might need it...I replaced my carb and I could eliminate that from my truck...might some day but it requires going through all the wires and picking out the ones from that harness that are needed...I have no idea what it actually does or how it provides feedback to the carb to control the idle...only know that it is far too many wires...

There may be a write-up about rewiring them but if there isn't I might do one once I figure it all out...I remember someone posted on TRS many years ago something about them but those posts were on the old site...

Are you having idle problems or is your truck running OK?

It is the single barrel carb. About to rewire the truck anyway. Thought I would try to get a price on what I need before I started. I thought the ICM was the metal box on the drivers side fender?
Yes the carb. was adjusted twice first time the engine sputtered in 5th gear. Second time it was driving alot better, but wanted to sputter abit before it warmed up. The mechanic who adjusted it the second time told me he couldn't hook the electrical plug for the choke heater on the carburetor because he couldn't locate the wire. I don't think the wire had ever been hooked up on this truck to my knowledge.

I will post a picture this weekend to show the area I am describing on my truck.

Does the box on the driver side have two or three plug connectors? There were two different depending on the motor and year. That is needed for start/run and you may be able to upgrade but not eliminate...

Here is the part I have been asking about?

I am not sure of what it is called? When looking in the Haynes manual the only thing that matched was something they called a MCU. It is on the right side wheel well behind the battery. ( Battery has been removed in this picture.)
The part the manual refers to as the ICM is on the left wheel well near to the carb and distributor. By the way the ICM has 2 plugs on my ranger.

OK, that looks like what I was told was the idle control module...on the passenger side...but now I'm not sure...mine, as far as I know, is not connected to anything...the one on the driver side is important for ignition and engine running...but I really have no idea how they work...just that I replaced mine at a cost of $100 when my timing belt broke not knowing wtf was wrong with my truck...

Anyways...I was going to check out the repair manual from the AARC on something else and wlll let you know if I find anything out...as long as you're not in a rush...lol

Hmmmmm...looks like the AARC is giving no info on this model...might be the password has changed so it will take a bit longer than I thought...

I`m pretty sure you can just get a carb without the feedback solenoid and wire it as a late 70s. It may have too much fuel pressure maybe add a mechanical fuel pump. As long as you dont have to pass emissions you can make it old school carb. You already have the proper ignition.

No hurry Mark_88 on finding out what the part in question is? My baby is just waiting on me to get parts together for rewiring. Just post when find something out.

I just did a search on Idle Control Module and found the part number: E5TZ-9L513-A.

this was from another Ranger site...and the OP called it the Idle Control module (on passenger side, not driver side) as I was told it was called years ago. I doubt Ford will have it but you never know...if you want to use it and replace it then that may be the first place to start...if you want to get rid that part I'm sure it can be done as someone else on here told me years ago...I've never touched mine other than to replace the bottom part that was kind of destroyed by the previous owner...mine is still in good shape although I hardly ever look at it unless I want something to worry about...lol...

edit: I also found ohe on e-bay for $30.00...
