General Maintainence: Nope!

Talk to someone that has changed plugs on an Aerostar, ok till you get to2, and 3 on pass side.

At least it isn't a 5.4 Triton. Sometimes those plugs remove themselves - violently. :shok:

I have a 4.0 Aerostar.

I have (twice) replaced the engine in a 4.0 Aerostar.

I have (Five times) pulled donor engines from Aerostars

There is little that anyone can tell me about an aerostar that would be "new"

Want "fun" for a simple job? Replace the power steering line on an Aerostar...

My buddy in HS had an Chevy astro van. It has like 230k mi but I remember it being a huge PITA to change plugs.

And my dad had the same thing on his 5.4 in his old expedition

I don't have any problems getting to any part on my truck that I ever had to do maintenance on. The hardest thing is unscrewing the oil filter and hoping you have the catch pan centered.
The worst is my wife's cavalier, I don't touch it unless i can see the part. Who puts the distributor and coil between the motor and the firewall.

Anyone ever change plugs on a Vega? And the fan belt on my ranger 4.0 got changed in the walmart parking lot with just a flashlight and a 3/8 ratchet. no big deal.

i personally had troubles with the rear drivers side one... the real fun is changing the plug wires that are routed under the manifold. we tied a piece of string to the old one and pulled the new one back through... if i owned an aerostar i would drill a hole in the floor board for the rear spark plugs :D

the fuel filters on the RBV's are really easy, yeah you need a "quick" disconnect tool on the newer stuff but its still only like 2 bolts to remove the shroud and a hose clamp holding it to the mount... quit whining

i work at autozone and see all sorts of these messes cuz people buy the stuff and figure out its too much work for them. i personally believe it is all designed so that you have to take the vehicle back to the dealer so they can fix it for you. like the newer tundras have special windshield connectors that for a long time you could only buy new wipers from the toyota dealer.

i see it as a challenge and i don't want to be a mechanic but i like working on stuff just for the problem solving bit of it.

Put plugs in a big block ford, in a mustang not designed for it. 460 in a fox body, pain in the ass. 428CJ in a 65-73 with small block shock towers, you may as well quit right there. These trucks are easy. Apparently this guy isn't very good at work on cars.

holy old thread! this guys a bitch though for sure.

:icon_rofl:

That was just funny.

Try changing a Power steering pump on a 1987 Mistu Starion. That only took me 4 hours. :annoyed:

well theres always one in every crowd a well we all know what

I am impressed with the ease of working on the RBV's compared to most vehicles actually........ Ford has some really dumb ideas here and there, but overall no worse than GM D/C or any of the foreign jobs for sure.

Man they should let us design the perfact truck. I like working on my Ford but there are a few things I would change. I liked my old 81 GMC crawl under the hood sit on the engine and change the starter wow good old days when things wornt cramed in. no bull shit gas and spark thats all you needed. The only computer was the tape deck. SOOOOOOOOOOO Simple.

i have a 4.0L in my explorer, i actually had a thread started a month or so ago asking if there even was a PVC valve cause i couldnt find it. i tried gettin to the spark plugs as well...ended having to take it somewhere, same for the fuel filter.

routine stuff should be easy to get to, it's BS that it isnt on these engines. if i recall correctly, older model 4 runners had a door in the driver's side fenderwell to get to the oil filter. you had to use a rachet and extension to get to it, but after you've done it once or twice, it wasnt that big of a deal.

having said all that, you know ford did it on purpose so that people might bring their cars and trucks back to the dealership for service and they can charge more money for the extra shop hours needed to disassemble your car just to get to the oil cap.
