98 Ranger XLT 4x4. Very basic truck with no A/C. cruise control, power windows, etc. First the winndshield wipers, then speedometer, and 4x4 control stopped working. Suspect the Generic Electronic Module (GEM). Cleaned the circuit card with alcohol and checked all fuses. Finding a replacement GEM for this vehicle is not easy nor I am sure one will work. Any suggestions? Also, where can I find a complete and accurate electrical schematic for this vehicle?

You can also go to your local library, get a library card, and many local libraries subscribe to Chiltons online repair. Their diagrams are ok, but they are free.

Here are the different GEM modules you could have that year. You need to get the number off your GEM.

+1 ^^^

Welcome to TRS :)

The GEM is what all 3 of those issues have in common in a 1998-2000 Ranger
Other than the GEM they don't have any wiring, fuses or relays in common

You could check the wiring at the GEM to make sure its getting 12v power from the 3 fuses(10, 20 and 25) at its connectors
Also that it's 3 grounds are good
It could be all sections of the GEM are not turning on

Don't recall ever seeing a GEM schematic
