Gearwrench tools?

Seems like some of you break a lot of tools. I generally lose them (well, my son does) before I break them. I think I may have used a tool warranty once in my 55 years, but I'm not even sure of that. Granted, I'm not a mechanic by trade, but it's pretty rare that a week go by that I'm not using some kind of hand tool.

In the last six months I have warrantied out almost all of my 3/8th sockets because they were worn out and not holding the hex of the nut/bolt properly.

I can absolutely understand that. After all you use them every day. Not really broken though. Just used up.

I break alot of ratchets, screw drivers, and tons of driver bits. Sockets and wrenches ill crack or bend once in a great while.

I should probably qualify my earlier statement. While I've rarely, if ever, used a tool warranty, I have broken my share of tools over the years. Mostly extensions and adapters, but a few sockets, ratchets, wrenches, screwdrivers and such. I've just never bothered with warranty. Mostly because I figured I'd probably gotten my money's worth out of the tool already or it was a cheap tool to start with. If I broke a recent tool that shouldn't have broken for what I was doing with it, I would likely warranty that.

I broke the square drive off a 2’ 3/8ths breaker bar, and I’ve broken/worn out a bunch of screwdrivers.

I had several 12 point craftsman 3/8 drive metrics either crack or wear to the point of not holding on hardware. I upgraded to a snap-on 6 point set, I did eventually need to replace those in the 10/13 mm sizes but overall was a great improvement over the sears 12-points.

I love 12pt stuff for tight spaces, sometimes you can just never get a 6pt lined up right. But they definitely wear out faster and are more likely to strip a questionable bolt.

that's when you remove the socket, rotate it 1/4 turn and put it back on. that rotates the socket 1.5 "points" which effectively gives you 12 point fitment.

hey, I used to wear a bowtie. way back in the 60s when I worked at grocery stores.

I go through a fair number of ratchets. Those are probably the #1 thing I replace. Gearwrenches and torx sockets are a close second... guaranteed to break at least one T55 every time I remove a pickup box.

Most of the tool exchanges I do are broken stuff I pick up cheap from yard sales and pawn shops. Broken ratchets are usually worth maybe a buck... if you're willing to go through the hassle of the warranty process, you can end up with some nice tools.

I picked up a used SK 1/2" drive ratchet a while ago that had a broken mechanism just to find out SK isn't what it used to be (no more parts that I could find), they have low tooth counts but have been decent... second hand can be a gamble but a couple bucks isn't too bad if you lose that gamble
