so I thought i'd be good with a 4.10. How ever I was wrong. So I got a 3.0 4x4 with 34' tsls. Right now with a 4.10 I can't even hit 5th. I want to say the speedo is lucky to see 45mph. I can get some 5.13s pretty cheap but be scared that will be to low for cruising the 4 lane. If needed I can get a rpm/mph reading for you guys. Just seeing what ever oen thought? maby a 4.88 would be more suited for this? Goin cost a bit of money for this, I don't make a lot o I just want to buy once.

I'm going to guess you're running a manual transmission in your 87 b2? You probably won't hit 5th with a A4LD :)

If so, you probably have either the FM145/146 or the Toyo. Either way it's a 0.84-0.81 5th gear.

Using http://www.grimmjeeper.com/gears.html, and your tire size, we get this:

RPM 750 3000 6000
1st) 5 20 40
2nd) 8 34 67
3rd) 12 49 99
4th) 19 74 148
5th) 23 94 187

Now, of course, you're not hitting those higher speeds because you lack the power. BUT, your 4.10s should have no bearing on you not being able to hit 5th gear or going over 45mph. If you're seriously having trouble getting over 45mph, how would switching to a taller gear help your top speed?

I need a little more info. How are you unable to hit 5th?

I ran 33's with 4.56 and a 3.0L 5spd and it was about perfect. 4.88's should be spot on with 34's

4:10s give 2000 RPM @62.6 MPH

4:56 would bring you to 2200 RPM @ 62 MPH

4:88s would get you 2400 RPM @63.2 MPH

5:13s give 2500 RPM @ 62.6 MPH

(Assuming 34" tires and 0.79 5th gear ratio, I may be a little off on the OD ratio)

its a 97 5spd 3.0, Im thinking 4.88s ill be driving this on the road some, Kind of want to keep it not winding like crazy.

Veefer, I noticed that with the calculator as well. The FM 145 or 146 and the Toyo listed in the tech section list a 0.81 or 0.84 OD and the calculator with the preloaded tranmissions list .79

*shrug*

Jarfly, I guess I misunderstood originally. You're just looking for a good running gear it seems.

My vote is 4.88s if you're doing quite a bit of wheeling, 4.56s if you're mostly on road.

The individual gear ratios on that calculator I linked above are just some BS starting points and are changeable fields, so you can put in your exact transmission ratios.

Notice it only goes up to a 4-speed, and if you have a 5 speed, you have to input the actual gear ratio value in the yellow box under 5th. Default is 0.00

I got the 0.79 5th gear figure from the specs of my truck provided by ford:

Earlier years/different transmissions might not be the same. That's why I added the disclaimer.
