Gears Help i have 3.73 want to go to 4.10 or even 4.56???

i have a 92 ranger 2WD 5 speed manual 2.3. i work for domnios driving all over the city. 3.73 gears seem very high for city driving even with 14'' tires and i never go over 60MPH. so given my job i want better MPG and i wanna be the fastest one off the line (or light) in my case. so i was looking at a 4.10 gearing or 4.56 the lower the better i think it would also save my clutch a bit more if take off was a bit easier, so please help me i need some advise before i go and dump money into a project like this

Go to the tech library. Look at gears. It has a chart for general gearing for mpg, and performance... Look more before posting everything is on this site

Hate to say it, but the 3.73 gearing with the 14" rim tires are probably the best combo. Any more gearing and you will get tired from the constant shifting.

For the pizza delivery business, it is best to invest in a vehicle with an automatic transmission. Get a Honda Civic or small car with a four cylinder engine and automatic. This way gas money doesn't eat your wallet up and you won't wear out a clutch any faster. But more fluid changes will be needed with the constant city traffic driving.

Past that.......... dude you must make a fortune to be investing in pizza delivery as a career.

I bought a protege to drive to my job, but i have pretty low level job..........

i just cant get over how retardedley slugish this truck can be, i love the ranger and the little 2.3 it has so im just wondering if a 4.56 or 4.10 gears would make it a bit quicker i tested it out on the highway and i got up to 86 but it took forever and i was in 4th gear doing about 3k rpm it jut seems stupid, i would try to get a rear end with a 4.10TC maybe from a ranger FX2

My 97 ranger with 30 in wintermarks wouldn't go 82 downhill with a 3 mile run. With stock a'ts it would go 85 on the same stretch of road.

I think 4.56 or 4.88's either on will have you taking off in second gear....

Thats the last gear ratio they make.

A higher gear ratio does anything but increase gas mileage. Unless you change your tires to go bigger, you rev higher, shift sooner, both make for lower MPGs.

Go buy a ford pinto or geo metro and get your 40 mpgs.

Since your in town delivering things I'd go with at least the 4.10. 4.56 still might be a little on the steep side on a truck sporting the 14's (but that has some wiggle room).

It might be easier or probably just as expensive to do the 8.8" swap compared to regearing the 7.5", especially if it's from a Ranger. you'll get the bigger brakes too.

What size tires are you currently running? I can do some comparisons.

Didn't you stick 31's on the back of your rig? And I can only assume your talking about the 2.3L.

I hope you can clear a few things up because that statement makes my head hurt.
