ok so i have 5.13 gears in the rear 8.8 and right now 4.56 in the front i switched from 4.56 to 5.13 i lost my job and dont have much money and really want to get out wheeling but i wont with that gear split. i can get 5.13 for the front d35 but they are about 270 shipped. i can get 4.88 shipped for like 150. i know i want to be cheap, but i wheel in sand and mud where there is enough give so i think it would be alright. but i really want to regear to 5.13 i know its the smart thing to do, but my wallet like the 4.88 idea. ugh i hate money!!! i just got a job, but wont have money for a while, gotta play catch up and really want to get out for memorial day weekend. why the heck does gears jump $120 from 4.88 to 5.13 that sucks, it takes the same dang process to make. although i do have 4.56 fronts i could sell to offset the price alittle bit i dont know

Do NOT wheel with different gears in the front and rear. It will cause binding and destroy parts.

yes and no, it depends what type of wheeling you do, mud it would be ok, same with sand, the two types i do. there is enough slip

No, no there isn't. What will you do when you catch on something that wont slip?

If you know so well, then why did you ask?

If you want to do it, then fine. I will say I told you so when you whine that you broke something and don't have the money to fix it.

you could stagger tire sizes front/rear with your current ratio.

either bigger for the back, or smaller for the front.

what size tires are you running now? post it up, and i'll see what i can do

i bet you could find 2 used tires for pretty cheap, and run those while you save up for the correct gears. then sell the 2 tires later to help re-coup cost

oh yeah, different gear ratios are ok if they are within 0.10 of each other. example: 4.56 & 4.50 (just made that one up for comparison)

just some quick numbers if you kept the 4.56 in the front you may be able to get away with running a 35 rear 31 front. but there is still a slight difference in overall ratio so the back would be pushing faster than the front can pull (it would be better if the front was pulling slightly faster). also you would want to check the actual tire diameter since some manufacturers for example only make a 32.5 in tire and call it a 33.

gear.................................5.13.......4.56.......4.88.......:1
tire diameter......................35.00.....31.00......33.00.....in
tire rev per DL rev...............0.19......0.22........0.20
circumfrence......................109.96... 97.39......103.67...in
dist traveled/driveline rev.....21.43.....21.36......21.24.....in
% speed vs 5.13.................100.0%..99.6%.....99.1%

don't know what tires you currently run, but this could be recalc'd accordingly.

If you can do the install yourself put the 4.56's back in the rear. It would be the same amount of work as switching things around in the front twice and would be free aside from your time.

As the ratio gets lower, the ring gear gets thicker and the pinion smaller... the ring gear requires a lot more material than going the other way with the pinion getting bigger. There could also be more machining with the different sized teeth too. Those are the most obvious reasons I can come up with.

i know all the wrong reasons why not to do it, i would throw 4.56 back in the read but i put them in my buddys jeep. my luck did change today and i got a new job, so i will get the right gears. i was just trying to be a cheap ass. btw i wasnt gunna run 4x4 like that all the time just 2wd till stuck and hope 4 wd will pull it out. i know it can gernade t-cases, or drive shafts or what ever the weak link is. the biggest problem is i was looking at the price of gears and just plain got irritated but all is looking better. i would like to find use 5.13 but people who have them wont get rid of them or are stil running them. anyway it was more of a rant rather than a question thanks for all the input but i knew the bad.

I got your solution, I'll help you out. I'll swap you my 4.56's for your 5.13's...Problem solved:icon_thumby:
