does anyone know what gear ratio came in the 1988 ford ranger 4x4 with the tow package?

look at your door sticker and compare it with the table in the tech library, that's the only way to be sure, none of these things are very predictable ratio wise...

i dont have that sticker anymore because the truck has been repainted 3 times so its covered up.... When i drive on the freeway at 65-70 im doing like 2800 rpm's with 31 inch tires can you estimate by that and i have a 2.9 manual 5 speed

I don't think so. Where would it be on the axle?

would be on one of the bolts on the rear cover. just a little metal tag with some stamped numbers. you can also put a line of nail polish on your driveshaft and rear end so they line up and do the same with your rear tire and backing plate. count how many times you spin the shaft to how many it spins the tire once.

did you look for tags on both axles? other option is to pull the rear diff cover and look at the numbers stamped on the ring gear or jack up the back and count the revolutions the driveshaft turns with one rotation of the tires

There should be a sticker or label on the passenger beam on your front end. There will be something there to tell you what is/was in it.
