I have a question about a gear change
the reason for the change is my a4ld has no o/d
looked under the hood no kick down cable
and at 55mph the tach reads 2500rpms
seems a little high. it now has 3.73 want to
go lower whats next 3.45 or?
running 235/75/15 now and taller than stock
let me know if I am going in the right direction
also did they come with no o/d?
the kid I bought it from had a trand put in
in march let me know thanks.

There is 3.45 , 3.08, and 2.73 I believe. You can use a gear ratio calculator to figure out your engine rpms at the desired speed

A4LD is a 4-speed trans so does have OD
3rd is 1.00, 4th(OD) is .75
2,500rpm with 3.73 axle and 1.00 gear, and 27" tire would be 54mph

I believe you have an '88 ranger with 2.9l reading other posts you made, which would have an A4LD 4-speed transmission, stock.
This is from the transmission page:
The best that can be told from the ATSG manual, the changeover date for single to dual solenoid versions on the A4LD occurred in mid 1988.
The single solenoid originally on the 1985-1987 transmission only controls the torque converter lockup function. Later models had the 3-4 shift inhibit solenoid added in 1988.

I take it from this you could have a bad solenoid so not getting overdrive, I would have a look and see if you have two solenoids and then check the wires and use OHM meter to test solenoid

here is the A4LD page

The C3 transmission was a 3 speed, no OD
