What should I put in my 93 explorer 8.8?Ive read to add 75W-140 but I have a LS rear and have read they need special oil. Which is it?

75w90 or 80w90 is fine, get a bottle of fritcion modifier to dump in it aswell if you are worried about the l/s chattering. If you aren't worried about the l/s chattering a bit on corners then don't add the fristion modifier.

any "gear oil" will work...its an axle, it really doesnt care what the viscosity is.

the "special oil" you probably heard about was the friction modifier, which works with any gear oil.

Will I need to torque down the cover to spec since im using silicone rather then a gasket?

30 ft-lb. Give it a little soft tug on the ratchet, but don't overdo it, if you used enough RTV (I use a 1/4" bead), some should ooze around the edges a bit.

There is no gasket, ford used RTV silicone from the factory. Just tighten them down snug by hand with a ratchet.
