gear mesh pattern???? what now!!

Yeah, it's definitely still much too deep. I'd try moving the pinion away a good amount, maybe .010 and see what it looks like.

FWIW, this is what mine looked like (Yukon 5.13s):

Drive side

Coast

I don't recall the exact pinion shim amount I used, but it was within .003 or so of what was stock.

This might help out too. These are acceptable gear patterns from Yukon.

id say those gouges were from you driving it. i dont think you wouldnt have noticed it turning by hand and hitting it.

That drive side looks right on to me. The coast side is a little blurry though...

I think it's still deep. The drive pattern (convex side of the teeth) is too close to the toe, and has no "oval" shape at all to it. You're getting closer though. I'd try taking out another 0.005-0.007 from the shim stack, and try the backlash around 0.008-0.009.

ok now i have my backlash with in spec of 14 and the specs are 11-16. so thats ok and this is what i got with a 15thousands shim on the pinion

Backlash is a bit much but still within spec, i'd run it.

Spec is .008-.015 (straight outta the Ford book)

What kind of gears are those? (or are they used gears?)

they are yukon 4.56's, and they are new. this is my first time doing this. the yukon manual says 11-16. what ford manuel said that, my repair manual dosnt have n e thing on gear set ups. y i dont know. do you think my back lash is ok ??

As I already mentioned earlier in the thread, the Yukon shit is wrong. My book is the Ford factory service manual (the same big ones the dealerships use).

Your coast side pattern looks good, but that drive side pattern I think still needs work.
Most of the Yukon gears I've set up have always had decent patterns, I'm thinking try taking yet another .005 off the shim stack and tighten up the BL some and see if it improves or gets worse. If it becomes worse, then I'd say run it like you have it above. I think you'll have some noise on it though.

what kind of noise are you talking about, because i put it together and at certan speed you can hear a fant noise very faint like a howl or fant hmmm. its hard to explain. will it hurt if it makes noise

If the gearset or bearings are making the noise, YES it will hurt.

You gotta be REALLY anal about that pattern.

how do check the axel to see if it is making noise, its hard to tell were it is coming from because my trucks exhaust is`so loud
