Ok i Had 31's on my truck (88 4x4 2.9 5speed) and 3.73's. I liked that set up and i have now gone to 33's and i am putting 4.10's in. My question is what will the 33's and 4.10's be like compared to the 31's and 3.73's

4.10s are not enough for 33s and neither were 3.73s for 31s IMO. You should really go for some 4.56s...

How are 4.10s not enough for 33s? Maybe on a weak block but even with the stock 4.0 I can squeal 33s with 4.10s that's more than enough to push 33s I have yet to see a reason for 4.56s at least with my setup maybe with 35s

Because he has a 2.9, BIG difference. I thought 4.10s with 33s was marginal with a 4.0 and awful with a 2.9.

To answer your original question.
At 70 in 5th with 31s and 3.73s you were turning 2200RPM, too low. With 4.10s and 33s you're almost up to 2300, again, too low.

4.56s will put you up at 2500, much better, 4.88s would be best though..

No actually at 70 in 5th i was doing about 2600 believe me i looked at the tach alot

Either your tach is off or your speedo reads low and you're going faster than you think you are... Calculations don't lie.

Agreed, 4.88 would actually wake that 2.9L up a little bit with 33s, and may even improve your MPG too.
I consistently get low-20s out of mine running 5.13 gears and 35s.

it all depends on what hes doing. i see a lot of highway driving at 65-70mph, and i love my 3.73 gears on 30's. and i have a basicaly stock carb 2.3(for now haha). plenty of power for me and what im doing. yet when i go on the trails i put it in 4low and go on my way. now if i was to be a in town truck that never saw a highway, ya it would have 4.56 in it. i think if he was happy with his 31's and 3.73 it shuld be about the same for 33's and 4.10.

and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that, some people would rather have their motor running 2000rpm and suffer mileage, and others want it at 2800 in its torque range but maybe have to re-build every so often.

To each his own as they say.

IMHO if he has the 4.10 and think they are going to work for what hes doing, throw them in the rear and drive it a little bit to see how they work out. if he likes them, gear the front. if not move on up to 4.56.

Spinning it at 2800 rpm ain't gonna hurt a damn thing. Its much better for it than lugging it all the time.

^^ x2.
mine doesn't lug at all. i keep the rpm's at about 2850, right where it should be in the torque/hp curves for my truck according to the tech library. i'm also hauling over 43 gallons of gas plus all the other tools, spares, etc. i need for my truck, especially on trips. usually have winds to contend with as well as more than a few hills, some way steeper than others. and i still get 21+ mpg average and i'm happy with that.
